How to make a wooden table from planks. Table: material, manufacturing technology, diagrams, designs - simple and complex

An ordinary table can be safely attributed to the category of furniture necessary in the house. You can, of course, just buy this item from the store. But it's not difficult to make a good solid table with your own hands.

The latter option is most often chosen by owners of their own homes.

Making a table from boards with your own hands

As the simplest option, you can consider in detail the manufacture of a table with a length of 120 cm, a height of 75 cm, and a width of 70 cm.For it, you need to prepare the following materials:

  • boards 40X140 mm, planed and trimmed, or a floor strip of a suitable size - for example, 36X135 mm;
  • a pair of bars with a section of 40X60 mm, a length of 70 cm;
  • 4 furniture screws 10 cm long, with a diameter of 8-10 mm and a flat head;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • chisel;
  • plane;
  • sander or bar with sandpaper fixed on it;
  • screwdriver and a set of drills.

Variant of a wooden vintage table (dimensions are in inches).

To make a countertop, you will need to proceed as follows.

The table top must be assembled from boards cut to size in the amount of five pieces. They should be attached to the bars using self-tapping screws.

For self-tapping screws, the length must be selected so that the tabletop board with their help would be securely attached to the bars, while they should not go through. When using a grooved board, the tabletop is assembled solid, but from the last board it is better to remove the tongue from the edge with a jigsaw, and stitch the side.

If a regular planed board is used, it is better to leave a gap of about 3-4 mm when assembling the tabletop, especially if the table is intended for a summer residence. Such a gap does not interfere with the use of the table, but it greatly facilitates maintenance and does not allow dirt accumulations in those places where the boards adjoin one another, making up the table top. It is very simple to ensure the gaps are identical: when assembling the tabletop, you need to lay a rail with the required width between the boards or use a metal corner.

Legs for construction

The legs are made of the same material as the table top. At one leg, both parts will be connected "in half a tree". Boards for making legs are marked as follows:

  • draw a rectangle on a sheet of fiberboard or plywood. Its dimensions are determined by the formula "A" X600 mm. Here A = 750 - b (that is, the thickness of the countertop, calculated in millimeters);
  • the board is placed diagonally across the rectangle so that the different edges of the board are in opposite corners. Now you can mark the line along which it will be necessary to cut the boards, the "joint knot" on one and the other boards.

After the markings are made, the legs are cut to length, each sample is taken in half a tree. Then everything is adjusted and assembled using PVA glue with the addition of small sawdust and several self-tapping screws. After the legs of the table are assembled, they must be attached to the bars of the table top with furniture screws, a stiffener must be reinforced between the legs - this is done with the help of long self-tapping screws. You can close both ends of the tabletop with bars, to fix them, use nails, which have previously “bitten off” the caps. They should be sunk into the wood in one blow of a hammer.

Almost ready. It is highly desirable to paint the product. To do this, you can use a stain or a colorless water-based acrylic varnish. Thus, protection against precipitation and external influences is provided.

Classic wood product

Those who prefer classic forms can be offered to make just such a table. The following materials will be required:

  • 4 pieces of timber with a length of 710 mm, section 10X10 cm;
  • a board with a section of 10X2 cm, cut as follows: two pieces of 800 mm, two of 1600 mm, two of 750 mm;
  • four boards with a section of 250X40 mm, length 2 m.

Manufacturing of table parts is carried out as follows. The wooden countertop will need to be rounded on both sides. To make the markup, taking into account that all the details are done by hand, you can use the most common gymnastic hoop or an object of a similar shape. It fits on boards that are tightly folded in relation to each other - first at one end, then at the other. According to the markings made, the boards are cut using a jigsaw.

All the details of the table have now taken the form necessary for the continuation of the work. They are cleaned with coarse sandpaper, then the surface is sanded and impregnated with stain two or three times.

The assembly must be performed in the following sequence:

  • collect the box-base from parts, the width of which is 1600 and 800 mm. For fasteners, galvanized self-tapping screws 4X60 are used. Before assembling, the joints are properly processed using waterproof PVA glue or good joiner's adhesive. Short parts of the box must be attached to the end with a longer one;
  • boards for the manufacture of countertops must be laid out on a flat surface. A prepared box is placed on top - it must be centered and its inner contour drawn with a pencil. After that, the box is removed;
  • in the most outlined contour from the corners, an indent of 110 mm is made - this is the place for the table legs. Next, on glue and galvanized self-tapping screws 4X45, boards are attached to the tabletop, which will ensure the integrity of the tabletop;
  • the box is installed on the tabletop, while the pre-made contour must be taken into account. The parts are fastened with self-tapping screws, while it is necessary to use steel corners. The place where the table legs will be installed must be left free;
  • legs are installed in the corners of the box, fixed with glue, screwed from the outside with self-tapping screws. The strength and durability of the structure largely depends on how tightly the table leg is placed in the corner of the box. Therefore, before using self-tapping screws, it is better to ensure that the legs are fixed in the corner in any convenient way. The do-it-yourself table is ready.

You can start using the table when the wood glue dries up and the structure gains the necessary strength.

The table is the second item after the stool that every novice amateur furniture maker should be able to do. The table can be created from different materials and have unique characteristics. It is a great intention for you to want to make your own piece of wood.

A table made of wood is quite easy to create with your own hands, it is enough to have minimal skills in working with carpentry tools. And the cost of the material will be significantly less than the cost of a table using metal, glass or plastic.

A piece of furniture made by your own hands will correspond as closely as possible to the desires of a happy owner, and it will delight the eye incomparably more than what was acquired. And most importantly, when creating a table with your own hands, you acquire important skills in working with the material, which will make the restoration of operational defects much easier.

What can make a good table

A particularly beautiful tabletop can be made of cheap non-varietal pine boards, knotty and twisted (without falling out knots, rot, fungus, wormholes), which, when well processed, give a wonderful pattern, to achieve which, when working with an expensive tree, you need to make much greater costs and efforts ...

When choosing a material, it is important to take care of the strength of the future product. To do this, you should pay attention to the density of the wood.

Soft (spruce, pine, chestnut, dogwood) is easily damaged during operation, which negatively affects the durability of the table. But scratches and dents can be hidden, although the restoration process will be quite frequent.

Hardwoods (beech, ash, maple, oak, walnut, fruit trees, elm) are difficult to handle on their own. And you may have to look for masters to work with them. But provide the product with durability.

External characteristics

It is very important to determine in advance for yourself the appearance of your future product. The basic rule of a good table is considered if the structure fits well into the space allotted for it and leaves a lot of free space for those sitting.

It is also important to consider that a table with a rectangular top will accommodate fewer people than a table with a round or oval shape with the same area. And the table for guests will be more expedient to be made in a folding version, which is expanded for big holidays, but in everyday life it is folded. Also, such a folding table will be convenient in the backyard.

Most often, you need to choose a kitchen table. It should be roomy and pleasing to the eye, to facilitate the process of working with him. But it should not interfere with movement in the room and in no way interfere with the process of culinary creativity.

Based on this, it is absolutely clear that the size of the table is chosen depending on the area of the room. Also, soft wood cannot be used for the kitchen table due to its use in "extreme" conditions.

The choice of the external characteristics of the product is a responsible process, therefore, before starting the formation of a table for a summer residence with your own hand, it is extremely necessary to carefully assess the needs for which this table is being made.

Transferring ideas to paper

When creating a structure that is the fruit of your imagination, you will have to develop a diagram and drawings of your table with your own hands. For which there is a huge variety of electronic programs.

After a thorough development process, it is imperative to transfer the result to paper. For fast and quality work, it is very important to use this manual constantly.

Creative process

The preparation of the drawings is the last preparatory step. Then you can start the most important part of the work - the manufacture of parts. Do-it-yourself wooden tables are much easier to create if the drawings and diagrams are as informative as possible. This reduces the likelihood of errors to a minimum.

You can make it yourself personally as a desk, as well as a magazine or children's version. With a certain skill, it is realistic to create a computer desk. And also a dining or country model. Each of the options is fairly easy to implement.

The canvas for the countertop and the board with the beams, from which the rest of the parts will be formed, are processed with an available tool or, at worst, with coarse-grained sandpaper to remove the defects present in the form of irregularities and protruding knots.

Boards are sanded from all sides, including side edges and corners. If you are creating a canvas from wood cuts, you need to make sure that they are dry enough, and also repair small cracks found after visual inspection. And it is better to groove them. To get a more reliable web adhesion and save time for assembling elements.

Transfer the scheme to the finished canvas. The main elements are cut out with a jigsaw and, if necessary, the sections are ground. The protruding support elements are trimmed by about 3 centimeters. Horizontal cuts are made on both sides of the supports (legs).

The workpieces are covered with a preparation that prevents moisture and pests from entering, and only after final drying is it allowed to resume the process of creating the table with your own hands.

Putting the details together

After making all the necessary parts, you can proceed to the sacred service. Namely, to put the desired masterpiece together. And this can be either a round table or any other selected product.

First, you need to assemble the support structure using screws and glue (first, thin channels are drilled with a drill to the length of the screw, otherwise there is a chance of splitting the part). For the connection, you can use galvanized screws, since they do not rust, and this is very important for wood products. Or wood glue.

According to the basic rules, the frame in length and width should be 30-25 cm less than the countertop.

On the sides, you need to attach additional boards to give rigidity and to hide the place where the legs are attached. Cut off the chamfers in the places where the legs are installed.

Then the table leg is fixed in place with clamps, and bolt holes are drilled in the frame. Place the supporting elements in their places and fix them with stoppers. Reinforce the structure with wood glue. Then set the tabletop in place for which furniture corners are used. At the very end, all visible screws are hidden by caps in the color of the wood.

The final stage. Finishing

A photo of the completed table can be seen below. This is surprisingly easy to achieve. Optionally, you can round either only the corners or completely the butt, depending on the type of table. It will be nice to make chamfers on the edges of the countertop.

In the entire structure, irregularities are sanded, with the help of putty, mistakes are hidden. To extend the service life of a self-assembled table, it is necessary to cover it with several layers of varnish or stain.

Thus, making a beautiful wooden table with your own hands is quite a simple pastime. And easy to do. The guarantee of extracting a solid, ideal in size and aesthetic result according to its drawings is: exact adherence to the manual, error-free execution and weighed selected material. And the resulting table will harmoniously fit into the exterior.

Photo of tables with your own hands

Friends asked me to make a table that can be placed in the gazebo in the country. I did not choose a special version of the project to make a table from a bar with my own hands, but suggested a simple scheme for assembling furniture from standard timber lumber: a bar and a board. The main idea was that the table was low and could serve as a bench at the same time. In the workshop I had all the tools and devices. It remained to check everything and prepare the workplace in order to make a table from a bar with our own hands.

Instruments

Since the structure must be made of wood, the tool was mainly needed for woodworking. Here's what I used when making a table from a bar with my own hands:

  • jigsaw;
  • saw;
  • gas-burner;
  • drill screwdriver;
  • a wrench with a socket nut head;
  • chisels;
  • reamer drill ø 2 cm;
  • hammer;
  • hacksaw;
  • clamps - 2 pcs.;
  • die for cutting external thread ø 6 mm;
  • grinder;
  • roulette;
  • brushes.

Materials (edit)

I went to a construction supermarket and bought the following:

  • PF 170 varnish - 0.5 l.;
  • joiner's glue;
  • screws 7 cm, 50 cm, washers and nuts, plastic plugs.

Step-by-step instructions on how to make a wooden table from a bar with your own hands

Initially, I wanted to make a table with my own and my own hands from 50 x 50 mm bars. But this idea had to be abandoned. Friends asked me to make massive loft-style furniture. Therefore, I used larger lumber. I decided to make the table in two stages: the assembly of the support structure and the formation of the table top.

Countertop manufacturing

  1. I cut the wood 10 x 15 x 600 cm with a saw into 6 pieces.
  2. I cleaned the upper corners along the perimeter of each element with an abrasive wheel at an angle of 45 ° and a width of 0.5 cm.
  3. To make 2 through holes ø 6 mm through the tabletop, I clamped 3 pieces each with clamps and drilled with a drill. Then I left 2 lines and added a new element and drilled again. I did this because there was no long drill.
  4. Outside, the holes were expanded with a reamer ø 2 cm to a depth of 1 cm.
  5. I sawed the reinforcement ø 6 mm into 2 pieces 0.9 m long.
  6. At the ends of the pins, I cut the thread with a die.
  7. I smeared the lateral adjacent sides of the wooden elements with wood glue.
  8. I inserted 2 pins into the holes. I put washers on the ends of the rods and screwed on the nuts.
  9. I closed the nuts with plastic plugs.

  1. All lateral and horizontal surfaces were sanded with a fine abrasive wheel mounted on a grinder.
  1. The gas burner slightly burned the surface of the countertop. This gave the wood a noble look, emphasizing the structural pattern of the cut of the wood.
  2. The entire tabletop was treated with a stain with a brush.
  3. The property of this tool is characterized by the fact that it penetrates deeply into the structure of the wood, strengthening and disinfecting it. But fine fibers create hairiness on the furniture surface. Therefore, I re-polished everything.
  4. The surface of the countertop was covered with PF 170 varnish for 2 times.

Assembling the support structure

Before making a table from a bar, I drew drawings of the support part and the table top of the future furniture. According to the dimensions and dimensions specified in the drawings, he began to make the supporting structure of the table with his own hands.

  1. I made the legs for furniture by sawing a 10 x 20 cm tree into 2 pieces 86 cm long. + Waste.
  2. At the top of the supports from the outside, I fixed bars 30 x 30 mm on screws.
  3. I made a crossbar from a board 20 x 150 x 660 cm, fixing it with screws to the centers of the lateral sides of the supports.

  1. He burned the entire outer surface with a gas burner, covered it with a stain, sanded it.
  2. The supports were varnished with PF 170 in two layers.
  3. I installed the tabletop on a support frame.
  4. I fixed the tabletop through the 30x30 mm slats with screws.

Cost of materials

  • timber 100 x 150 x 6000 mm = 1500 rubles;
  • timber 100 x 200 x 2000 mm = 440 rubles;
  • timber 30 x 30 x 2000 mm = 50 rubles;
  • board 20 x 150 x 740 mm = 20 rubles;
  • abrasive wheels for a grinder = 50 rubles;
  • reinforcement with a diameter of ø 6 mm, length 2 m. = 20 rubles;
  • nuts and washers, 4 pcs. in stock;
  • sandpaper = 10 rubles;
  • stain - 0.5 l. = 100 rubles;
  • varnish PF 170 - 0.5 l. = 50 rubles;
  • wood glue 250 g = 160 rubles;
  • screws 70 mm, 50 mm available.

Total costs were: 2400 rubles.

Agree, it's still easier than making a sofa or wardrobe. To implement your plans, you do not need to specially study or invite specialists. To work, you need inspiration, and prepare the necessary materials.

Preliminary stage

The appearance of the finished product is important. When making a table for the dacha with your own hands, do not neglect it.

It will be nice to observe the admiration and surprise of the guests to whom you declare that you made it yourself.

  1. Its main base is a wooden tabletop. As a rule, ready-made boards or wide boards are used for this.
  2. An important factor is also the selected type of wood, from which you decide to make the table:
Conifers
  1. Spruce and pine are soft wood species, they are easy to process. Just do not forget about the features of such rocks, which are more flammable.
  2. Also, a table for a summer residence made of such a tree has a wonderful smell of pine needles. But remember that there is a large amount of resin in this material, and it will show through on the surface for some time.
Deciduous
  1. Hardwoods such as beech, ash and oak are stronger and more beautiful.
  2. When working with them, it is advisable to use special tools for grinding and sawing.
  3. If you handle a deciduous tree correctly, then build a table that you will use for years to come.
  1. In addition to the table top, the table should have legs. You can make them from a wooden panel or buy ready-made ones.

Tip: if you did not find them in the store, look at the counters that sell auxiliary materials for making stairs - 4 pieces of metal or wood balusters can be quite useful to you.
Factory blanks will add some gloss and chic to your table.

Preparation

First you need to determine where you will install the furniture, whether you plan to take it out of the house. For example, a narrow and long table that will provide freedom of movement of people around the room would be a good solution for a country house.

Materials and tools

  1. Grooved boards. They will create a tight connection and will protect the table from liquid entering the crevices. You can also use a pair of ready-made wood boards, 2000x300 mm in size.

Tip: To ensure the stability of the table against loads, select the thickness of the boards approximately 30 mm.
When choosing a material, make sure that the boards or boards are even, they must absolutely fit each other exactly, this will save time for individual measurements and trimming.

  1. Rails for fasteners - 3 pieces. They are needed for the stability of the structure. The most suitable size is 2000x100 mm with a thickness of 28 mm.
  2. Table legs (ready-made) or balusters, their price depends on the quality of the material.
  3. Hacksaw.
  4. Self-tapping screws.
  5. Electric drill. Please note that this tool must be in stock. You will definitely need it, so if you do not have your own, then rent it or ask for temporary use.

Advice: if there are interruptions with electricity in your area, renting a diesel generator for a summer cottage will help solve the problem.

  1. Polyurethane varnish. You can choose from both glossy and matte. The second one shows the structure of the tree well. Instead, you can use natural oils to protect the wood from external factors.

In the photo - a suburban diesel generator

  1. Good quality brushes.
  2. Grinding machine. Its absence will significantly complicate the work.
  3. Sandpaper with fine and coarse fractions. This will make it possible to provide the table with the desired smoothness.

Process

Below is a step-by-step instruction:

  1. Connect the boards or boards and lay them upside down... At this stage, it is necessary to monitor the docking so that the country table is level.
  2. Secure shields or planks... Place the slats along the long sides. This will allow them to be reinforced and fixed along short boards. To ensure the stability of the table, additionally fix the boards (or shields) with rails in the center in one or two places.
  3. Be careful when locking the rails.... Screw the self-tapping screws slowly, without changing the degree of pressure, angle and intensity. Otherwise, the shield or rail will split, affecting the quality of the product.
  4. Fix the table legs at a distance of 50-70mm from the edge... Using an additional rail, strengthen the attachment point so that the support does not deform after a while. This will enable the table to look perfect for a long time. Fix the legs also slowly.
  5. Turn the table over and remove debris and sawdust, sand all the roughness with sandpaper and a sander... Dry the table thoroughly with a dry cloth.

Decorating

Build a country table yourself is not all.

Now you need to start finishing, and, if you like, decorating.

  1. Cover the entire surface of the table with polyurethane varnish. (See also the article.)
  2. Then you need to let it dry for a day.
  3. Carefully examine the surface of the table, sand it again with sandpaper and varnish it a second time.
  4. If you wish, then you can paint the table, for example, with acrylic paint.
  5. As soon as the surface is completely dry, the product can be used for its intended purpose.

Output
