  • Chipboard- a material that is quite common and very often used for the manufacture of furniture. It is produced from dry chips and resin by pressing. Among the disadvantages are environmental insecurity. Plus - a relatively inexpensive cost.
  • MDFit is considered a more environmentally friendly material compared to particleboard, but it is also more expensive. It is obtained by mixing wood chips with melamine-modified carbide resins and pressing them. Minus - highly flammable, while even rapidly heating objects, not to mention an open fire, pose a potential risk of ignition.
  • An alternative to chipboard and MDF can be furniture board... Has a relatively inexpensive cost. It is a strong and environmentally friendly material. It consists of glued bars, tightened by a press.

  • Metal can also be used to make a table. Most often, stainless steel is used for these purposes. The cost of such material is quite high, and a cold surface will require the use of tablecloths or napkins. However, the sparkling appearance of such an attribute is sure to attract everyone's attention.

Dimensions and shape

The most common form is rectangular... A rectangular table is convenient in that it can accommodate a sufficiently large number of people, while requiring less usable space for itself than a round one. It can be easily pushed against the wall. But because of the sharp corners, both rectangular and square options are considered the most dangerous.

Round- claims to have a usable area 1.5-2 times larger than the area that is needed for a rectangular table designed for the same number of persons. It is believed that a round table is stronger than other forms to create a sense of coziness in the room.

Ovaltables, as well as rectangular tables with rounded corners, combine the advantages of rectangular and oval shapes. Oval tables are considered the most elegant and aristocratic.

Dimensions can range from large to compact. If necessary, the compact table can be designed in such a way that it can be increased. For example, a folding table when folded takes up little space, when unfolded it can accommodate a fairly large number of people.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. If you intend to make this kitchen attribute yourself, you must definitely make a drawing.
  2. To make a solid wood table, you will need the following tools: a plane, a grinder or a grinder, an electric jigsaw, a circular saw, a drill (with a 6-8 mm drill), a screwdriver, sandpaper, self-tapping screws (30-35 mm), wood glue, dowels, clamps, pencil, tape measure, gloves and goggles.
  3. It is necessary to buy supports (legs) for the table, which can be different - from ordinary rectangular to curly.
  4. For a countertop 80 cm wide, four boards 120 cm long are required. They must be dry.
  5. For smoothness, the worktop must be sanded well. The joints must be processed in such a way as to achieve full contact with each other.
  6. In order to avoid deformation of the countertop from excessive moisture, you need to lay the boards in a pattern towards each other. You will need dowels to connect the boards.
  7. At the ends of the boards that will be connected, make holes with an 8 cm drill. The distance of the holes from each other should be 10-15 cm. Then these places must be sanded and greased with glue the butt, holes and dowels. Drive the dowels into the holes and thus connect the tabletop. Remove excess glue.
  8. Using screws and glue, it is necessary to connect the transverse and longitudinal boards with the legs. We make two holes in the longitudinal boards from above, they are useful for attaching the tabletop. Wait 12 hours. Install the countertop.

Cover the finished product with varnish, paint or stain. When using stain, you need to take into account some nuances - choose the right thinner (if you do not have enough experience, you need to use a slow thinner), the surface to be treated must be evenly sanded, it is important to adjust the gun correctly (the torch must be oval and the applied layer must overlap the already applied one by half).

Traditionally, dowels are used to make wooden furniture. Such a connection is not visible and has a low cost.

For tables made of wood, it is appropriate to use wooden dowels, as they dry out at the same time in this case. For chipboard, it is better to use plastic ones, since chipboard practically does not shrink.

But it can be difficult for inexperienced craftsmen to achieve the most accurate calculation when planning dowel holes. Therefore, the alternative to them are Euro screws or confirmations. Of course, this somewhat increases the cost of the product, but makes it easier to manufacture.

A kitchen table made of laminated chipboard with metal legs can be a fairly budget solution.

  1. A chipboard sheet can now be easily bought in the required size, or cut it yourself. The most common plastic top coat makes the worktop quite abrasion resistant.
  2. For work you will need: an edge for processing the end, screeds, connecting and end strips, designed to protect the joints and ends of the table top from moisture, dirt, grease. In addition, they make the look more aesthetic. To make such a table, you also need to purchase legs.
  3. On the chipboard sheet, mark the desired radius of curvature. Next, cut the tabletop in a given shape with a jigsaw. To avoid chipping off the plastic surface, it is better to use a saw with reversible teeth. Using a router, make a groove and fill in the edging.
  4. Be sure to put sealant in both the edging and the top edge of the worktop. Remove excess sealant. There is a special solvent designed for cleaning surfaces from such materials. Using self-tapping screws, install the holders and put the legs on them.

It should be noted that such a table can be made quite easily and quickly.

The next method allows you not only to assemble a modern model of a wooden table without colossal costs, but also to remake an old tabletop.

  1. This will require unnecessary boards of the same size, joiner's glue and three clamps.
  2. The boards must be laid out on the work surface so that the middle of the board being laid is at the junction of the two previous ones.
  3. Using wood glue and clamps, you need to fasten the boards together. Then smooth the edges and sand the surface. Sand edges and cuts.
  4. If the table is made as a whole, then for the manufacture of the legs you will need two boards and a corner that connects them together, as well as wood glue.
  5. First we glue them with glue, then we strengthen them with a corner.
  6. Along the perimeter, from the inside, where the legs are connected to the table top, we attach a rim.
  7. Fasten the tabletop, legs and rim with a corner.
  8. Cover the surface with varnish.
  9. To make or restore a table, you can use wooden pallets.

The simplest table design

The simplest table design is shown in the photo below. At the same time, this design is the least expensive both in terms of materials and manufacturing forces.

Optimal table dimensions

One of the advantages of making a table for a summer residence with your own hands is that the table can be made of any size. Thus, the table can be easily adjusted to the dimensions of the gazebo, veranda or kitchen.

To make it easier to navigate in size, I will give a dimensional grid, which is most often used in the manufacture of tables. Dimensioning is based on the size of the countertop.

  • 60x90 cm. A table with such dimensions is optimal for 3 people. It is convenient to dine at such a table, drink tea, etc. Due to its size, it will fit well into any small space.
  • 80x120 cm. 4 - 6 people can sit comfortably at this table. Usually a table with this size is appropriate for a large kitchen or veranda.
  • More than 120 cm. Tables of this size are good for feasts. In the conditions of a summer residence and a limited space of a country house, such a table is mainly installed in a gazebo or under a canopy in the open air.

Naturally, when making a table with your own hands, the size can be made arbitrary, however, to make it comfortable at the table, you should adhere to the recommendations given above.

Manufacturing procedure and table drawing

Table legs are made of a wooden bar with a section of 40x40 mm and a length of 70 cm. If you want to decorate the table, you can use balusters as legs. They are carved and will make the table design more interesting.

The support for the tabletop can be made from a board with a section of 25x150 mm by sawing it lengthwise into two halves. For support, you need 2 boards 650 mm long and 2 boards 1050 mm long.

With the countertop, everything is much more interesting. The countertop can be made in a variety of ways. The easiest option is to purchase a furniture board of the required size. It can be purchased in building materials hypermarkets.

Going along this path, it should be remembered that a furniture board is made by gluing small pieces of boards, and with constant exposure to atmospheric precipitation, it will quickly become unusable. Therefore, a table with a furniture board top must be varnished or painted to protect it from moisture.

Another option is a plank tabletop. The boards can be used in any size. For example, with a section of 25x100 mm. This is a simple and cheap countertop option. This option is devoid of the disadvantages that are inherent in a furniture board.

However, without special equipment, it will hardly be possible to fit the boards tightly. Therefore, the table top will have gaps between the boards. This looks good for a garden table. But not very practical.

You can get rid of the gap mentioned above by using an unusual, grooved board. It will cost a little more, but you will get a smooth, even tabletop.

Euro floor boards can be used as grooved boards. They are easier to find in the store. It is only important not to forget to stitch them from the wrong side.

Assembling the table

Once all the elements of the table are ready, you can start assembling the table. The assembly of the table is carried out in a specific order.

First, the support for the table top is assembled and the legs are fixed to it. This is the most difficult part in assembling the table. As described earlier, the worktop support consists of 4 planks. They must be connected together. This can be done in several ways.

The photo below shows how to assemble a tabletop support and attach a leg to it using a special tie.

This method is the perfect solution, except for that fact. Getting a special screed can be tricky.

Another way is to tighten the entire structure with a piece of wood.

Using this method, you need to pay attention to the fact that the bar must be sawed off at an angle of strictly 45 degrees. Otherwise, the table will not be rectangular.

In my opinion, the simplest and most affordable option for assembling the legs and support for the table top is the use of a metal construction corner 50x50 mm in size. You can buy it in any store, and it has the correct geometric shape.

The last step in assembling a table is the installation of the table top. Depending on the type of tabletop, it can be fixed in different ways. The furniture board can be fixed with corners or with glue. Separate boards with screws and glue.

Steps

Part 1

Designing the table model

    Check out the different table options to determine which table you want to build. There are so many different types of tables, so take some time to deliberately choose a specific project. Go online and look for pictures of the tables, paying attention to the style of each item. You can also find possible ideas in furniture catalogs and carpentry magazines.

    • Base your selection on your own needs, such as what you will be using the new table for and how much room you have for it.
    • Perhaps you need a large, rustic dining table. Or you want to make a small coffee table or an elegant bedside table.
  1. Sketch the table on paper. Use your pencil and ruler to draw your ideal table. Don't worry about the exact size just yet. Just imagine what your finished table should look like. Give it the features you need, and then think about the size.

    • When the approximate design of the table is ready, mark it with the appropriate dimensions with a pencil. Check with hardware stores for the exact dimensions of the lumber you intend to use.
    • The dimensions of the table will depend on the type of table. For example, a dining table is usually noticeably larger than a bedside table.
  2. Calculate how much lumber you need. Break the table design down into its constituent base elements. A simple table will have elements such as a table top, legs and a supporting frame connecting them. If you are planning to equip the table with additional elements, do not forget to include the materials for them.

    • For example, try making a table with a tabletop made of three 5cm x 30cm boards 150cm long, legs made from four 10cm x 10cm timber 70cm long and a support frame made of two 5cm x 10cm boards and 75 cm long, as well as two boards with a section of 5 cm x 10 cm and a length of 145 cm.
    • Purchase additional lumber for any additional items you want to add to your table. For example, you can add crossbars for the legs to increase the strength of the table or provide sliding elements of the tabletop.
  3. To make a durable table, choose an inexpensive but reasonably strong wood like pine. Pine is not a particularly hard wood, but it is convenient for beginners to work with. From it, you can easily make a table that will last for decades. Also, durable tables are often made from solid maple and cherry.

    • Consider other inexpensive timber options. For example, building-quality fir can be used to make tables. Also, good furniture is obtained from poplar, but this wood is more difficult to tint with stain.
    • For outdoor furniture, it is better to opt for mahogany, cypress or specially treated wood, such as pine, impregnated with preservatives under pressure.
  4. Buy lumber and cut it into pieces. When you know exactly what you need, go to the hardware store and buy lumber. Many stores can even cut materials to your size, so do not be lazy to ask about this service. This will reduce the amount of work to be done a bit so you can start assembling the table right away.

    • If you have a workbench, a vise, a circular or conventional hand saw, you can cut the wood yourself. Always wear polycarbonate safety goggles and a respirator when using the saw.
  5. Mark the position of the support frame on the underside of the tabletop. The support frame is attached to the table top itself and table legs, preventing these parts from moving. From the edges of the tabletop, measure about 2.5 cm deep. Then, with a pencil, draw a line here that will indicate where the support frame is attached to the tabletop.

    • The presence of an indent of 2.5 cm will prevent such a situation when the support frame sticks out from under the table top. It also leaves a little more space under the table for free placement of legs between its legs and, in general, improves the appearance of the table.
    • If you have not yet sawed wood for the support frame, to calculate the dimensions of its parts, use the dimensions of the table top (length and width), taking into account the required distance from the edge and the section of the boards used.
  6. Glue the support frame to the worktop and clamp it in a vice. Set the details of the reference frame to the previously drawn lines. You will have two long pieces along the edges along the table and two short pieces across it (and inside the long pieces). Coat the inside of the pieces with an even coat of wood glue to secure them to the countertop. Secure the parts with a vise overnight to prevent them from moving.

    • You can also securely attach these parts to the countertop using self-tapping screws. In this case, use a deep hole drilling machine to pre-create the basting holes for the self-tapping screws.
    • Alternatively, you can first attach the legs to the table, and then connect them to the support frame using self-tapping screws. To make the legs stronger, you can additionally attach corner braces inside the support frame.

Part 3

Attaching the legs
  1. Saw legs of the required length from the bar. Attaching the legs is the most difficult operation in making a table. If you do not attach the legs well, you will not end up with a solid and reliable table, but a flimsy, unstable structure. Start by measuring the exact length of each leg and sawing off the corresponding pieces of the boards with the saw.

    • Even if you have the materials cut at the store, the parts may appear slightly uneven. Check their size before attaching the legs to the table.
    • If you are making your own legs, first roughly cut the parts with a circular saw. Then fold the legs evenly, clamp them in a vice and, if necessary, trim to the same size.
  2. Glue the legs at the corners of the support frame. The legs must be located in the corners of the support frame, where its parts are joined to each other. Apply adhesive in the corners to the inner side of the support frames and the underside of the countertop. Then place the legs in the corners and secure with a vise.

    • You can wait for the glue to dry, but this is not necessary. Just keep the legs securely in place with a vise so they don't move when you fix them with the screws.
  3. Drill basting holes in the base frame and table legs. The screws should be centered on each foot-to-support frame. Drill holes from the side of the support frame towards the leg. Use a drill with a diameter of about 6 mm (but thinner than the screws used) to make the first basting hole in the wood of the leg. Repeat on the other side of the reference frame. In total, you will have 8 basting holes.

    • If you want to additionally fasten the legs with crossbars, the process will be somewhat more complicated. You will need a circular saw to make grooves on each leg a little less than half the thickness of the bar. On each leg, it will be necessary to make 2 grooves (one on each side where the crossbars will be attached.
  4. Attach the table legs to the support frame with self-tapping screws. Use two self-tapping screws with a diameter of about 7 mm for each leg. Screw the screws through the support frame into the legs. Use a ratchet screwdriver for this.

    • Do not use a drill to screw in self-tapping screws. They can go very tight and accidentally break off.
    • Make sure the legs are level and at right angles to the table top before screwing in the screws.
  5. Wait until the glue you used is completely dry and set. Read the manufacturer's instructions that came with the glue to find out how long you will have to wait. If you leave the table alone overnight, you can be sure that the glue will dry out. Usually the table can be turned over to the correct position even earlier.

  6. Turn the table over on its legs to check its stability. Turn the table over carefully. It can be pretty heavy! Place it on the floor and try to rock it. If the table is wobbly, it means that the legs are not perfect enough. Perhaps they are of different lengths - in this case, you will need to turn the table back and shorten the legs to the same length.

    • Although the legs can be cut with a circular saw or a hacksaw, it is easy to make mistakes and shorten them too much. Instead, it is best to grind some of the feet down a little with 80-grit sandpaper and then sand them with 220-grit sandpaper.
    • The position of the legs themselves can also create problems. Make sure they fit snugly against the table top and support frame. If necessary, unscrew the screws and correct the position of the legs.

Part 4

Wood sanding and tinting
  1. Sand the table with 80-grit sandpaper. This is a coarse sandpaper, so it will roughen the wood, which is perfectly normal. Just think about what the finished table will look like! If you look closely at the wood, you will notice the direction of its grain (lines). Sandpaper the entire surface of the wood in the direction of the grain (including the underside of the table and legs).

    • Stains are different. Oil-based compounds penetrate well into wood and create a fairly durable result. Water-soluble stains are easy to apply, but unevenly absorbed into the wood. Gel stains are thick enough and create a strong tint effect.
    • To process wood with high quality stain, process only one side of the table at a time.
  2. When the first coat of wood stain is dry, apply a second coat. Let the first coat dry overnight before painting the wood again. The first coat of stain is likely to look dull and uneven. Cover the table with another coat of stain just like you did before, then let it dry again. When you return to the table again, it should be ready.

    • Wipe off excess stain before leaving the table to dry. This will achieve a uniform toning effect without overly dark spots.
  • Search the internet for table making diagrams. A variety of detailed diagrams can be downloaded for free or purchased for a small fee.
  • Create the table you want! For the table, you can use not only different types of wood, but also other materials. For example, table legs can be made of pipes, and the table top itself can be made of metal or glass.
  • When assembling wooden furniture, be sure to drill basting holes, especially in wood that is 2.5 cm or less, so that it does not crack.
  • Consider recycling lumber. This can take more effort in designing and shading the table, but will often produce a more interesting end result.
  • Fasten wood exclusively with self-tapping screws. Nails do not hold well and can lead to cracks. In addition, the screw will be easier to remove if you make a mistake.

Warnings

  • Be careful when working with tools! A drill or other equipment can be quite dangerous if mishandled.
  • Be sure to use protective equipment when working with tools. Wear earplugs and safety glasses. Use a dust mask and do not wear long clothing that can get caught on tools.
  • Many tinting products contain toxic substances that evaporate during work, so work with them with a respirator and with good ventilation.
