Cooking tile glue: secrets and more. Tile glue - composition, types and classification of the mixture for floor tiles Do-it-yourself tile glue

One of the types of finishing materials is tile adhesive, but despite its name, it is used not only for fixing tiles. Such an adhesive composition perfectly adheres to many materials.

This glue has been known since Soviet times, then it had only one composition, and now there are many different types of it on sale, which are used for fixing any facing materials.

Types and composition of the base

Previously, a cement-sand composition was used as it, to which oil paint, PVA glue or glue paste could be added. Then, solutions with adhesive additives appeared on the market, which were distinguished by good adhesion and were able to perfectly bond concrete walls with the necessary cladding.

Now in hardware stores you can find such a variety of tile adhesives that it can lead to confusion before choosing them. Each type has its own composition, which is intended for a specific area of application.

Its characteristics are influenced by additives from mixed chemical compounds, these can be:

  • antifreeze additives;
  • polymer modifiers;
  • water-retaining inclusions.

The article describes how to use

And the base of the glue contains cement and sand in certain proportions. That is, in principle, the slab composition is a mineral-polymer composite of complex compounds. As a percentage, the tile mortar consists of 95% of the dry mix, and the rest is occupied by various additives.

Varieties of tile adhesive

There are two groups:

The latter are sold in plastic buckets that have different volumes. This is a completely ready-to-use adhesive. After purchasing it, you can immediately start gluing the facing material, it is enough to mix the contents of the plastic container before that.

Before applying the glue, it must be properly diluted. To do this, you need to study the instructions and find out the norms for obtaining the desired consistency. The result of the work will depend on the correct dilution of the composition.

What characteristics does

Its purchase depends on the properties and purpose, so you need to know what technical characteristics the required composition has. If the tile adhesive is based on cement, then the following requirements must be observed to work with it:

  • the temperature of the work carried out should be in the range from +5 to 30 0 С;
  • adhere to the specified amount of water to dilute the composition. On average, 25 kg of dry component should account for 5 liters of liquid;
  • the thickness of the recommended application layer must be observed. It usually ranges from 3 to 15 mm;
  • the pot life of the tile adhesive is 3 hours. After the adhesive solution has been diluted, it must be used within 20 minutes. After the tile is glued with it, it can be adjusted for another ten minutes. ? The composition completely hardens in a day;
  • some types of adhesives have a frost resistance of 35 cycles.

Scope and cost

Its price is influenced by the properties and quality of the additives. Manufacturers of building materials are trying to diversify their product range, and every year they release new types of tile adhesives for various surfaces. Here are some of the varieties of brands and their products, indicating prices and areas of their application.

How to make tile adhesive with your own hands

Cooking proportions

How to do it yourself? There are times when you urgently need to get a new portion of the adhesive base, and the hardware stores are already closed, then you should use the step-by-step instructions for making tile glue at home. First, you need to prepare its components: cement (M-400), sand and wallpaper glue (PVA may also work). In the process, you will need clean tools and a container. So, let's get started, you need:

  1. Dilute wallpaper glue with water... The proportions are taken from the instructions indicated on the packaging of the glue ingredient.
  2. Take sand, its fractions should be about 2 mm. It is best to sift this component to keep it clean before use.
  3. After that, it is mixed with cement.... Proportions: for one liter of the latter, there should be 3 liters of sand filler. Concrete plasticizer can be added if desired.
  4. Adding wallpaper glue must be done in portions.... First, pour in 200 ml, if the mixture has not yet reached the state of fat sour cream, then you can bring it to it by pouring in another portion of glue.
  5. After that, you should try to glue the tiles with the resulting mixture.... If it is well applied to its surface, and the material attached to the wall can be moved, then the glue is correctly made. In case of deviations from the desired state, the composition can be adjusted by adding water or dry ingredients.

Some craftsmen, not having wallpaper glue at hand, make homemade composition without it. In principle, in this solution, it is only necessary to be able to correct the tile during the fastening process.

The video shows the use of tile glue:

Using the commercially available formulations of tile glue, you can glue completely different materials on almost any plane of your home. Naturally, it can be done at home, but the purchased option excludes obtaining an unsuitable consistency of glue, since it has an exact recipe and dosage of its components.

When laying tiles, it is very important to properly dilute the glue, otherwise problems will arise. Firstly, it is much more difficult to work with a liquid or too thick mass, and secondly, the quality of the masonry suffers. In addition, it is important to choose the right formulation for your specific conditions.

The reliability of fixing the tiles directly depends on the correct preparation of the adhesive solution.

Types of glue and their features

  • Universal cement. The most popular composition. It is made of Portland cement with modifying additives, contains particles of latex and other materials. It is easy to dilute such glue, just follow the instructions on the back, observing the correct ratio of dry matter and liquid.
  • Reinforced. It is used to glue heavy elements, and also allows the coating to withstand more intense loads. This effect is achieved through the addition of strengthening ingredients.
  • Moisture resistant. Mainly used for surfaces in constant contact with water. Unlike conventional mixtures that break down under the influence of moisture, this glue has a repellent ability, and therefore is immune to its influence. It is the ideal choice for decorating swimming pools, saunas and bathrooms.
  • Polymeric. It is used indoors, as it does not tolerate temperature fluctuations and environmental influences.
  • Special types. Modified samples of mixtures that are designed for specific jobs. For example, for drywall and wood (the composition compensates for the movement of material), as well as for underfloor heating and lining of furnaces (heat-resistant and fire-resistant), external work (not afraid of frost), etc.

Prepare a solution and yourself. It is not difficult to do it yourself, since the available components are used: sand, cement, water and sometimes slaked lime.

The principle of preparation of mixtures is the same.

Homemade mortar is a good substitute for tile glue.

How to choose a quality product

Since it is not always possible to make tile adhesive correctly at home, it is much easier to purchase a ready-made mixture. We will give several recommendations to help you make the right choice:

  • Trust only trusted manufacturers. Firms with a good reputation monitor the quality of products. Little-known brands of mixtures do not guarantee that the raw materials used and production conditions meet the standards.
  • Pay attention to the composition. Each type of glue has its own specific recipe. In addition, the grade of the components must comply with the standards.
  • Date of manufacture. It takes only six months from the date of manufacture to the deadline for use. The expired mixture loses some of its properties and it is no longer possible to glue the tiles with such a composition.
  • Storage conditions. Dry powders should be kept indoors with low humidity levels. This is important to preserve their qualities.
  • Curing time. Normal glue sets quickly, but the master still has the opportunity to adjust the position of the tile within the first 20 minutes after laying.
  • Fixing ability. The mortar must firmly hold the ceramic tile, not slip or deform.
  • Adhesion level. The adhesion to the surface is ideally 1 N / mm2. This indicator also makes it clear how much force will have to be applied to remove the lining after the mortar has dried.

When choosing high-quality glue, its fixing ability plays an important role.

Mixing rules

The mixture is diluted in small portions, so you have the opportunity to work without haste and lay the tiles with high quality. The proportions for preparing tile glue are indicated on the package, but do not rush to blindly follow them. At first, take only 2/3 of the liquid and mix with a full serving of dry powder, gradually add the remaining water until the solution has a suitable consistency. Add more liquid as needed.

Since it is rather difficult to thoroughly stir tile glue with your own hands, use a construction mixer. Check the thickness of the mass with a spatula; it should be flexible enough, not to fall off in lumps, but not to spread. Leave the glue for 15-20 minutes so that all components are completely swollen and combined into a homogeneous mass.

It is best to use a construction mixer for thoroughly mixing the glue.

How to make a solution yourself

Since making the tile adhesive yourself is easy, you can save money on materials. To make the mortar correctly, you need sand, cement and water. The proportions of dry components are approximately 5: 1. The glue plasticizers are replaced with hydrated lime. Instead, you can use PVA, washing powder or liquid soap. When doing this, keep an eye on the amount of water.

Pre-sift materials to remove clumps and impurities.

This is the standard recipe for tile glue. For laying tiles in the house - quite a worthy option. In general, making a solution is not so difficult, even a beginner can handle it. And if you use ready-made glue, you will save yourself time.

Dry building mixtures are a material that is essential for any repair. Each type of coating on our market has its own chemical and technical properties, which is manifested in the methods of installation, scope of application and features of operation. So, ceramic tiles have different purposes and methods of installation. Therefore, it is logical that a certain type of glue is used for each type of tile.

  • Porcelain stoneware - it has a low degree of water absorption, and it is not subject to temperature changes, therefore, the adhesive mixture for it must be elastic;
  • Clinker - has properties similar to porcelain stoneware. If this type of tile is used for facing stoves and fireplaces, then the glue should include kaolin and chamotte clay. The same mixture can be used for warm floors;
  • White or red clay tiles - you can use an ordinary cement-based mixture for it;
  • Large and heavy tiles - such a coating is laid with glue containing reinforced crumbs, which will save it from slipping off the surfaces;
  • Floor tiles - need an elastic composition due to heavy loads.

These are the main types of tiles and features of the composition of the glue for them. Knowing what type of flooring you will use and on what surface, you can decide on what adhesive to glue the tiles. It is necessary to take this with full responsibility, because the wrong choice will make all your efforts in vain: the coating will begin to peel off, break and will not last as long as it should.

Important! To determine the type of composition, in the absence of experience in choosing it, the most correct decision would be to consult with a specialist in this field.

Preparation for work

Work should not start until all the necessary materials are available. Also, collect all the tools that you will need in the process. Always have a sponge and a bucket of water close at hand, in which you can quickly wash the instrument and collect spilled liquid. Cover all areas that require protection (furniture, furnishings) with newspapers, tarpaulin or protective film. You can use tape to secure it. But do not overdo it, because then together with it you can tear off pieces of wallpaper, paints and finishes.

Think in advance about the course of work, so that at the end you are at the door, and not in the corner of the room. However, there are times when you need to move around freshly laid tiles. For these cases, prepare pieces of plywood at least 20 millimeters thick in advance to use as a runner. After walking this path, lift each sheet of plywood and check to see if the tiles have moved.

The tile adhesive for each type of coating has its own calculation of the amount. Thus, a porous surface of cement absorbs more glue than a concrete slab, and a porous unglazed slab more than a glazed one. In hot weather there is a strong evaporation of the liquid from the composition of the glue, therefore it is necessary to apply more of it than would be required at normal temperature. Due to the influence of a large number of factors, it is not possible to draw up any table for calculating the amount of glue.

DIY styling mix

Many people believe that the best tile adhesive is one that you make yourself. This mixture is made from sand and cement. Cement acts as an astringent and sand acts as a filler. They must have a homogeneous composition and not contain any impurities. Note! The sand should be fine, the maximum grain size should be no more than two millimeters.

Cement and sand are taken in a ratio of one to three. The measure is volume, not weight. The mixture is kneaded in water, but before that it is thoroughly mixed. The finished mixture should be like sour cream in terms of density. The solution is not used immediately, but when it begins to harden.

This mixture is the best tile adhesive for both indoor and outdoor use. It is laid on concrete, brick, plaster, plaster and other surfaces. If the cement mixture for some reason is not suitable for work, then in the store you can buy ready-made elastic paste.

Sasha asked a question:

I decided to lay the tiles in the kitchen myself, but I don’t want to spend extra money. At home there is a bag of cement left over from the pit in the garage. Please tell me how to make tile glue with your own hands so that it is no worse than the glue mixture from the store.

Tiler's answer:

Everyone who has planned repairs in the house is trying to save on building materials and prepare an adhesive mixture for tiles with their own hands. I will tell you a recipe that I myself have repeatedly used for laying tiles.

In order to prepare adhesive for tiles, you will need: a mixing container, a construction mixer, cement of the M-400 or M-500 brands, sand, and plasticizers. In the role of plasticizers, I use PVA glue, but you can also use CMC brand wallpaper glue, washing powder, liquid soap or detergent.

What is this article about

Recipe with the addition of PVA or CMC

Having taken out all the necessary components and tools, let's proceed to the direct preparation. To do this, mix cement and sand in a ratio of 1: 3 or 1: 4, depending on the brand. We begin to add water to the dry cement-sand mixture in parts with constant stirring, achieving a homogeneous mass. At this stage, the most important thing is that there are no lumps left in the solution. After the cement-sand mortar is ready, PVA is added to it, previously diluted with water (in a 2: 1 ratio). Usually, the amount of added glue (diluted in water) is 5-10% of the volume of the cement-sand mortar. It is better to add glue in equal portions, remembering to stir. The preparation of the adhesive mixture ends after the required working viscosity has been reached.

And now I will tell you how to make an adhesive mixture using CMC glue. Since wallpaper glue is sold in the form of a dry powder, before adding it to the cement-sand mortar, it must be prepared using the recommendations indicated on the product packaging. Dissolved and swollen wallpaper glue is added to the cement mortar in small portions of 200 ml. After adding CMC, the mixture is thoroughly mixed until the working viscosity is obtained.

Recipe with added detergent, liquid soap, or laundry detergent

You can also prepare tile adhesive by adding liquid soap, washing powder, or dish detergent to the grout. These additives increase the fluidity of the tile adhesive and, most importantly, do not change the quantitative water content.

As an example, I will give my recipe for making tile glue with the addition of detergent. To begin with, we prepare a cement-sand mortar. It should be done in the same proportions that I indicated above. Add detergent to the finished solution at the rate of 50-100g (or 1-2 tablespoons) per bucket of cement. Stir the solution until a homogeneous mass is obtained and the glue is ready. It is not recommended to increase the amount of detergent, as this will lead to the formation of efflorescence after curing.

Additives

In the manufacture of adhesive mortar for tiles, in addition to (or instead of) PVA, CMC and detergents, you can add special additives such as MasterTherm, superplasticizer - C3, water glass, dibutyl phthalate, resin additive DEG1, superplasticizer D5, etc.

They will give the glue such unique properties as frost resistance, heat resistance, moisture resistance, resistance to chemicals, plasticity, increased adhesion, etc. The method of using these additives will be described in the instructions supplied by the manufacturer.

And finally. To understand whether the adhesive prepared by your own hands is ready for use, it must be applied to the tile, and if the tile moves freely along the floor in any direction, then the glue can be considered ready.

Tile adhesive is one of the types of finishing materials, but its application is broader than its name suggests. The composition of this glue allows you to glue a wide variety of materials, so everything is not limited when working with ceramic tiles.

Tile adhesive was widely produced in Soviet times, but then its consistency was determined by GOST, i.e. third-party ingredients could not be added to it, otherwise it could no longer be called tile glue.

Now the situation is somewhat different, therefore on sale you can find many different brands of glue, designed to bond a variety of facing materials to the surface.

Types of tile glue, its basis - what is included in the mixture

The composition of tile adhesive in the old days included a fairly standard set. Comprises:

  • A mixture of cement and sand.
  • Oil based paint.
  • PVA glue or glue paste.

Then other adhesives appeared on the market, in which included adhesive additives, which can significantly improve the adhesion of the adhesive, as well as the composition of acrylic and resin. You can safely glue the cladding material to the concrete wall so that the same tile sticks to it very well.

The modern market offers many types of glue, which can differ in the most varied composition.

It is sometimes very difficult for an ordinary buyer to choose a suitable option, because the composition of tile adhesive directly depends on its scope.

In order for the glue to meet its characteristics, it must be diluted in the correct way, therefore, you must carefully study the information on this on the packaging.

How to make DIY tile adhesive - recipe

It is very important to know the approximate composition of the tile adhesive, if you want to make it yourself. Of course, the easiest way is to purchase it in a specialized store, but what if the work is in full swing, and all the hardware stores are no longer working?

It is in this case that an understanding of how to make tile glue on your own according to a recipe will come in handy. First, you need to make sure you have the basic ingredients for the glue:

  • Cement - M-400 grade is suitable.
  • Sand.
  • Wallpaper glue or regular PVA glue.

Naturally, we also need containers for mixing the ingredients, as well as various tools. The manufacturing process will look like this:

  • first you need dilute wallpaper glue with the amount of water indicated on the package. Remember that proportioning is very important for the correct consistency of the glue;
  • next we need sand. You can buy it at a hardware store, telling the seller that you need sand, the fractions of which should be about 2 mm. Sift the sand if required;
  • then we mix the sand and cement. Here you also need to observe proportions: one part of cement will require three parts of sand;
  • our task in the preparation of glue is achieve the consistency of thick sour cream... That is why diluted wallpaper glue should be added to the cement-sand mixture in portions. First, you can pour in one glass, then stir the solution and, if necessary, pour in more wallpaper glue;
  • then you can proceed to the tests. We apply the composition to the tile, after which we apply it to the surface. If the glue adheres well to it, and it is of sufficient consistency to move the tile along the wall, then we did everything right.

If something did not work out, then the required consistency can be achieved by adding dry mixture or water.

For more information about homemade glue preparation, see the video:

Tile adhesive is in great demand, which is explained by its decent hardening characteristics, as well as quite affordable cost.

The composition of Eunice tile adhesive includes a standard set in the form of cement, special filler and chemical elements. Another important component is ordinary water, which is used to dilute the dry mixture.

So, a 25-kilogram bag will require about five liters of liquid.

Glue is applied to the tile in a layer of about 1.5 cm, which allows it to be quite economical. On average, 4 kg of the mixture is consumed per square meter.

The scope of application of Eunice glue is wide enough. It can be used on surfaces such as asphalt, gypsum, brick, concrete, etc.

Remember that after preparing the glue, you need to use it up within 4-5 hours, otherwise it will lose all its properties.

Basic rules in work

  • in room the temperature must be acceptable for work... For gluing tiles, it must be in the range of 5 to 30 degrees Celsius;
  • it is necessary to observe the correct amount of water in the dilution of the glue. On average, it will take about five liters of water per 25 kg bag to get a normal consistency;
  • the correct amount of the compound must be applied to the tiles. As a rule, 3-15 mm of glue is applied;
  • the average lifespan of the glue, so to speak, is 3-4 hours. At the same time, after gluing the tile to the surface, we still have about 10 minutes to adjust the position of the tile;
  • as for hardening time, it is about 24 hours, after which you can safely walk on the tiles or perform any other manipulations.

Which to choose?

We have already said that which glue to choose depends entirely on the scope of its use. To choose the right option, you just need to know where exactly you will use it.

Water resistant

To lay the tiles on the floor, you will need glue that can level the surface. In this capacity, you can use epoxy glue.

Also the final choice of adhesive composition will depend on the following factors:

  • the specifics of the works themselves, i.e. whether they will be carried out indoors, or will external work be carried out;
  • the type of surface on which the tiles will be glued - brick, etc .;
  • indoor humidity, as well as temperature indicators;
  • view of the tile itself.

There is no need to purchase the glue that is more expensive than the rest. Remember that not always the product with the highest value will be better than others in terms of quality.

Often, the high price is an elementary consequence of the promotion of the brand, therefore, in fact, you overpay only for the name of a popular brand.

But to acquire very cheap adhesives, because the result of this can be fallen off tiles and other negative points. The best option is glue from the middle price category, but from a fairly well-known company.

The fact is that popular manufacturers follow the basic rules in manufacturing, which allows their products to meet basic quality standards. We also recommend that you read our article which will tell you which one is better and.
