Salmon ridge baked in Provence herbs is a “supplier” of tasty pieces of fish pulp for a light salad with fresh leaves of wild garlic. Champignons are lightly fried in olive oil, and then watered with apple cider vinegar. Such mushrooms are tastier than regular pickled ones, and they are better suited for baked fish. Wild garlic and fresh dill coexist perfectly in one salad, emphasizing the aroma of each other. Garlic spicy garlic permeates both the flesh of salmon and slices of mushrooms.

A coniferous tree or shrub on a site is always healthy, and many conifers are even better. Emerald needles of various shades adorn the garden at any time of the year, and volatile and essential oils secreted by plants not only aromatize, but also make the air cleaner. As a rule, the majority of zoned adult conifers are considered to be very unpretentious trees and shrubs. But young seedlings are much more capricious and require competent care and attention.

Sakura is most often associated with Japan and its culture. Picnics under the canopy of flowering trees have long become an integral attribute of the meeting of spring in the Land of the Rising Sun. The financial and academic year here begins on April 1, when magnificent sakura blossoms. Therefore, many significant moments in the life of the Japanese pass under the sign of their flowering. It is very interesting for me to analyze how people's tastes and addictions to certain foods have changed over the centuries. What was once considered tasty and was a commodity was losing its value over time and, conversely, new fruit crops conquered their markets. Quince has been cultivated for more than 4 thousand years! And even in the 1st century BC e. about 6 varieties of quince were known, and even then methods of its propagation and cultivation were described.

Exotic lovers will love the unpretentious, beautiful hibiscus flower. Flowers similar to magical butterflies amaze with a variety of shapes, sizes and a rich palette of colors. Chinese rosan, ketmy, okra, Sudanese rose, Syrian rose - a list of wonderful names for this magnificent shrub.

The birthplace of hibiscus is southeast Asia and Polynesia. In Malaysia, it is one of the symbols of the country. His image is printed on coins. And in Hawaii it is called the flower of beautiful women. During national holidays, Hawaiian girls and women decorate their hair with amazing hibiscus flowers.

Hibiscus differ from each other in size, color and shape of flowers and leaves. It is impossible to remember all the names of this beautiful plant. All rainbow colors and shades have large terry or simple flowers. They, like, are very popular in Russia.

And although you can admire the beauty of a flower only a day, he adorns himself for 8 months. The secret is that in place of the fallen flower, a new bud appears. It is only necessary to treat him with care and to know the features of caring for him. We can distinguish its main types.

Hibiscus hybrid

It was named so because it was bred by crossing red, pink and holly flowers. They breed him because of the flowers of huge sizes of indescribable beauty. This grassy plant has been decorating parks and courtyards for many years.

Hibiscus chinese

More commonly known as Chinese rose. This shrub can grow from two to three meters. He has oval dark green leaves with serrated edges. Rose count about 500 varieties. It has a rich palette of colors: from snow-white to purple. Petals of flowers are often terry, reach up to 15 cm.

Hibiscus dissected

This shrub has small flowers of red or orange with fringed curved edges. The leaves of the bush are glossy, have a green color.

Most often, this plant is used to create landscape compositions. You can plant it separately, you can group to form a hedge. There are about 250 varieties.

Among them there are shrubs, and trees, and herbaceous plants. In temperate climates, Syrian hibiscus is most often planted.

To grow this beautiful plant is easy. The main thing is to know the rules for caring for him, to listen to the advice of gardeners.

Place for planting and watering

To successfully grow shrubs, you need to take care of the planting site.

Hibiscus is a thermophilic and photophilous plant. Therefore, the place should be well lit and protected from wind and cold. The soil should be light and permeable.

With intense heat, mulch will help maintain moisture: straw, fallen needles, chopped bark, and so on. Dry air can provoke wrinkling of leaves and falling buds on a shrub. Therefore, it is necessary to spray the plant abundantly.

Planting, care and propagation of plants

Florists recommend planting it in well-warmed soil. It is advisable to take seedlings strong, with a well-developed root system. It will be easier for the plant to endure seasonal adversities, to gain strength over the summer and prepare for the meeting of winter colds.

Propagating hibiscus is very simple. Most often, gardeners cut a suitable stalk, put it in water. For cuttings suitable branches with three nodes. It is advisable to cover with a container on top to maintain humidity. When the roots appear, it is transplanted into a pot of earth. It is advisable to take the land from the garden, adding a third of peat to the soil.

For the winter period, the pot can be taken into the room, or you can plant the stalk in the ground. It is necessary to wrap it up for the winter in order to maintain a young root system. Thanks to this method, species characteristics of the flower are preserved and the next year it will delight gardeners with flowering.

Secondly, hibiscus can be propagated by dividing the bush. This method depends on the number of shoots and age. Thinning bush is desirable every year. This will prevent chopping of flowers.

The most time-consuming method is seed propagation. Seeds are sown in the soil at the end of February, pre-treated with an epin preparation. It is necessary to take the prepared soil composition: peat and sand mixed in equal amounts are added to the soil.

The container is covered with glass, periodically opening for watering and ventilation. When 3-4 leaves appear on the seedlings, the plant is stopped and transplanted into pots. If all the recommendations are followed correctly, then in the third year the plant will delight with beautiful flowers.

Winter holiday

With the onset of cold weather, they reduce the amount of watering. After falling off the foliage from the flower, it is cut off, departing from the root 8-10cm. So that the plant does not die, it is covered with paper bags, mats, straw or sawdust. Sometimes it is watered to moisten the soil.

You can dig a plant and plant it together with a lump of land in a pot. In this form, send it for the winter to the basement or to the room. At home, the flower will remind you of the summer with its greenery and flowers.

Top dressing

Dressing the flower every week, always after watering. For dense foliage, fertilizers with a high nitrogen content are selected. For lush flowering and growth, it is desirable to alternate mineral and organic fertilizers. With the onset of cold weather, the rose must be prepared for winter. To do this, from September 2-3 times it is necessary to feed it with any potash fertilizer.

Shrub pruning

Lovers of the Syrian rose (as garden hibiscus is most often called) need to remember that new flowers appear only on young shoots. Therefore, the bush should be trimmed. You can trim it after two years of age and do it annually to improve and form a bush.

Branches that are pleased with their color must be removed. On the cut branches, side shoots will appear on which peduncles will form. This will contribute to the formation of buds next year. Be sure to cut weak and diseased branches, leaving up to two cm from the bud with leaves. Shoots growing inside the bush and those that grow parallel to the main trunk are subject to removal.

Pruning is done before the beginning of the active phase of the bush's life, at the end of winter. He is not afraid of pruning. She gives the flower a well-groomed appearance, rejuvenates it and stimulates violent flowering. With careful care, garden hibiscus can grow in a permanent place for up to 20 years.

Pests and diseases of hibiscus

Although the Syrian rose is an unpretentious plant, gardeners may encounter some unpleasant difficulties when growing.

  1. Buds are falling off. This is due to lack of fertilizer, lack of moisture, cold.
  2. Yellowed leaves. It is necessary to reconsider the amount of moisture, lighting, nutrients (deficiency or excess), as well as temperature fluctuations.
  3. Lack of flowers with copious amounts of foliage. The reason is an excess of nitrogen fertilizer or a lack of watering in the spring.
  4. Root disease. Lack of moisture in dry weather.
  5. Chlorosis of leaves (yellowing and falling of leaves, drying of the top of shoots). Deficiency of iron and magnesium, soaking of roots, low acidity of the soil.
  6. Leaf fall. Long-term drying of the soil.

Most often, hibiscus suffers from attacks of spider mites, aphids, thrips, and insects. For prevention, the plant should be sprayed with soapy water, and then with Actellik insecticide.

Exotic room decoration

It is advisable for people who want to see this flowering bush year-round to breed indoor hibiscus. It looks very nice among other indoor plants.

The flower purifies the air in the room, fills the air with a delicate and pleasant aroma, favorably affects other indoor flowers. It can be grown like a tree, or you can form a beautiful bush of various shapes. Hibiscus indoor is unpretentious, but you need to know some features of care for it.

1. Lighting. The flower feels comfortable near the windows that face west and east. Putting on the windowsill is not recommended. Rectilinear sun rays negatively affect hibiscus leaves.

On warm days, the flower can be taken out to the balcony or to the garden. It is necessary to ensure that the rose does not stand in the draft. In winter, hibiscus needs additional lighting. With poor lighting, the plant will not please lush flowering.

2. Watering. Watering the flower must be regularly defended with water. When the soil dries, the rose discards the flowers. Very well tolerated by spraying the flower. In spring and summer, it should be watered as often as possible, but with the advent of autumn, the amount of watering must be reduced.

Very beneficial for the growth of the flower is moist air. The easiest way to put an air humidifier, but you can put a flower pot in a pan. Pour expanded clay or pebbles into it, periodically moisturizing them. To prevent the roots from getting wet, there should be no water in the pan.

3. Transplant. It is advisable to transplant young plants every year. The pot should be selected 5-10 cm more than the previous one. Narrow pots prevent hibiscus from throwing flowers. For transplanting, they prepare garden soil, sand and peat (2: 1: 1). You can add finely crushed charcoal.

At the bottom of the pot must be placed drainage. Adult plants are transplanted once every three years. In between it is enough to change the top layer of the earth.

Useful properties of hibiscus

  • From the flowers of Sudanese roses (sabdarif) make real tea "Karkade". But at home, it does not grow. People learned how to make healing teas from Chinese hibiscus. Grind 5g of petals and insist in a glass of warm water for 7-8 hours. With this infusion, it is good to rinse your mouth with inflammatory processes, drink with insomnia, with hypertension. Milled leaves and petals help with abscesses.
  • A conditioner for the hair is prepared with a decoction of Chinese rose flowers, and the pulp from the flowers is used as a shampoo, and as a mask, and as a hair dye. Hair after such washing looks simply gorgeous.
  • The fruits of Okra (edible hibiscus) are widely used in cooking. They are fried, stewed, boiled, frozen, canned. Unripe fruits successfully replace green peas, and Gombo coffee is prepared from ripe and roasted ones.
  • Hibiscus seeds and roots are used in medicine.

The extraordinary world of hibiscus gives people a sense of beauty, peace and tranquility.

Flower hibiscus (lat.Hibiscus)   It belongs to the vast family of deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants of the Malvaceae family, numbering about 300 species that grow in nature in the tropics and subtropics of the New and Old Worlds. In a temperate climate in the open ground, only Syrian hibiscus and triple hibiscus can grow, as well as a new species obtained in the 40-50s of the twentieth century on the basis of North American hibiscus swamp, bright red and armed, hybrid hibiscus, or garden hibiscus. All forms of hibiscus hybrid are frost-resistant. Everyone's favorite Chinese rose, or Chinese hibiscus, in our latitudes is grown only as an indoor or greenhouse plant, although the hibiscus rose likes to spend summer vacations in the fresh air.

Garden Hibiscus - Description

The hibiscus garden plant may be a tree, shrub, or herbaceous plant. For example, tree hibiscus in the garden is a Syrian rose, which is grown both as a standard tree and as a bush up to one and a half meters high. And grassy hibiscus is represented by varieties of hybrid hibiscus. Herbaceous plant forms can be annuals, although perennial hibiscus is much more attractive to gardeners.

Despite the differences in form, all hibiscus have common features.   Hibiscus leaves are more or less notched, petiolate. Hibiscus flowers are large, bright, simple or double, with a wide range of colors - white, yellow, raspberry, dark red, lilac, blue, violet and purple. There are varieties with a border around the edge of the petals or with an eye of a contrasting color. Hibiscus fruits are five-leaved seed boxes. Today, in addition to garden species, there are about five hundred forms and varieties of hibiscus.

  Hibiscus planting

When to plant hibiscus

Before planting, think carefully about where your hibiscus will grow, because the choice of place depends on how long the plant will decorate your garden - with the right site and good care hibiscus grows in one place until 20 years old!   Hibiscus seedlings are planted in the spring, when the threat of night frost passes, so that over the summer they can take root and get stronger. Ideal for hibiscus is a bright and sheltered from the wind place with light fertile moisture-permeable soil - one in which roses are planted well. You can even arrange hibiscus among roses, they get along perfectly.

How to plant hibiscus

If you plant a tree-like hibiscus, the pit for it should be twice as large as the root system of the seedling. A drainage layer of broken brick about 15 cm thick is placed at the bottom of the pit, then a ten-centimeter layer of sand, a compost layer 15 cm thick and again a sand layer of the same thickness. To fill the pit, mix the top layer of soil, taken out during the preparation of the pit, with peat and sand in a ratio of 2: 4: 1, carefully place the root lump in the pit so that the root neck is barely underground, and cover the pit with the prepared mixture. Then spud the sapling so that an extensive opening for moisture forms around it, pour the plant in this circle, and when the water is absorbed, pour into the excavation of the earth, leveling the surface of the site. If you have a need to plant hibiscus in the fall, be sure to mulch the trunk circle and tie the plant with fir spruce branches.

  Hibiscus Care

Hibiscus

Caring for hibiscus garden is very simple and not time consuming. As soon as young green shoots appear on the hibiscus, remove the old dried stems from it. Loosen the soil regularly around the hibiscus, remove weeds and make sure that the hibiscus bush does not thicken much. During the active vegetation period, from June to September, hibiscus needs to be fed with a high content of phosphorus and nitrogen twice a month, and in the fall, when preparing the plant for winter, potassium fertilizers are added, in addition to phosphorus ones. Unfortunately, hibiscus flower lives only a day,   but with good care, the plant blooms so abundantly that instead of one flower another immediately opens, so do not forget to remove wilted flowers in time.

Watering hibiscus

Hibiscus care includes regular watering of the plant, especially in the hot season, but you need to water the ground under the hibiscus only after it has completely dried. If the dry season is delayed, be prepared to water the hibiscus daily.

Hibiscus pruning

Hibiscus pruning is carried out for sanitary purposes, as well as to give a tree or bush a certain shape. Many people prefer to grow hibiscus in the shape of a tree, but for this you need time and patience. In a young, freshly planted plant, the branches are shortened to the level of two or three buds, not only cutting a well-developed trunk. In subsequent years, at the end of winter, cut the side shoots to one or two buds, and the stem to 5-6 buds. When the stem reaches the required height, form a tree crown from strong shoots, shortening them by several buds. Remove the undergrowth and trim the top of the trunk slightly.

How to prune hibiscus to maintain plant hygiene?   Sanitary pruning is carried out in early spring, before the sap flow begins. Old, diseased, underdeveloped and growing inside the bush shoots are completely removed, and last year’s growth is shortened by a third, which greatly stimulates the laying of new flower buds.

Remember: the stronger the hibiscus will be cut, the more it will give young shoots, which means that the more blooming it will be.

Anti-aging haircut   an older bush involves removing all old, dead branches and shortening the remaining shoots inside the bush by two-thirds. It will be better to cut branches around the main shoot to different heights - this will give the bush a beautiful shape.

Hibiscus transplant

If you have a need to transplant hibiscus, do it in early spring, after pruning the shoots to half the length and before flowering begins, in the order as already described. How to care for hibiscus after transplantation?   Do not forget to water the plant abundantly, but otherwise treat it, as described in the previous sections, and in a year it will bloom. If you are replanting a hybrid hibiscus, at the same time as a transplant, you can divide the rhizome of hibiscus.

  Propagation of garden hibiscus

How to breed hibiscus

As you can see, even planting gardeners can do both planting and caring for hibiscus. The reproduction of hibiscus is equally uncomplicated, and the care of it after reproduction. Garden hibiscus (Syrian) is propagated by layering, grafting, but most often by cuttings and seeds. Hybrid hibiscus is propagated by dividing the bush, grafting and green cuttings.

Seed hibiscus

Growing hibiscus from seeds begins from January to March. Before sowing, the hibiscus seeds are soaked for half an hour in a dark pink solution of potassium permanganate, and then for a day in a small amount of epin solution so that the seeds are barely covered with it. After that, the seeds are sown in containers with a mixture of sand and peat, covered with glass and placed in a warm place where the temperature is between 25-27 ºC, it would be nice to arrange a lower heating for the container with sowing.

It is also necessary to regularly air the container with seeds, remove condensate and moisten the substrate.

When the first leaves develop at the seedlings, they are seated in personal pots. Make sure that the seedlings do not stretch: if they lack light, they will have to arrange artificial illumination of the seedlings. Hibiscus seedlings are planted in open ground in mid-May. Strong specimens can be planted immediately in a permanent place, and weaker ones are planted for growing on a training bed at a distance of about half a meter between the specimens. Garden hibiscus, unlike hybrid hibiscus, also propagates by self-sowing.

Hibiscus propagation by cuttings

For vegetative propagation, cuttings of hibiscus with two to three internodes are cut in the summer, the lower sections of the cuttings are treated with a growth stimulator, then they are planted in greenhouses with a peat substrate and lower heating is organized. Hibiscus rooting takes place within a month, after which the cuttings are transplanted into pots with leafy soil, peat, soddy ground and sand in equal parts, regularly watered, and when new shoots grow, they are pinched to stimulate tillering. As soon as the bush is formed, it is transplanted into the open ground, and if there is decent care for it, hibiscus from the cuttings will bloom in the first year after planting.   Experienced gardeners manage to root hibiscus cuttings not in the ground, but in the water.

  Pests and diseases of hibiscus

Harmful insects and hibiscus diseases

Hibiscus is rarely affected by insects and diseases, but if in dry times it suffers from a lack of moisture for a long time, thrips, aphids, whiteflies and spider mites can occupy it. To eliminate the pests, you will have to resort to double treatment of the plant with the insecticides Actellik, Fitoverm, Interv, Karbofos with an interval of a week or ten days.

Of all known diseases, hibiscus in the garden is most often affected by chlorosis - the lower leaves of the hibiscus fall, and the new ones grow yellowish. This happens due to a lack of nitrogen and iron in the soil, therefore, iron chelate should be added to the water for irrigation, and in the spring, do not forget to introduce complex mineral fertilizer containing nitrogen into the soil.

In the photo: Hibiscus cultivation in the open field

Hibiscus turns yellow

Hibiscus leaves turn yellow from chlorosis, as well as in the case of an injury to the root system that the plant could have received during transplantation. If the hibiscus turns yellow due to the roots, then it is necessary to add Zircon or Kornevin to the water for watering (see instructions) and for spraying the leaves (three drops per half liter of water). Hibiscus leaves turn yellow and as a result of insufficient watering in a hot dry summer.

Hibiscus does not bloom

If you planted hibiscus in a bright and spacious area and take care of it, as agricultural technology requires, but nevertheless does not want to bloom, most likely the problem is the lack of phosphorus and boron. And if the shoots slowed down, the problem is also a lack of nitrogen. Do not forget to make fertilizers necessary for hibiscus on time, and it will certainly bloom.

Hibiscus leaves fall

If the hibiscus leaves fall in autumn, this is a natural process, but if it happens prematurely, then the problem arose either due to improper watering (insufficient or excessive), or the root of the plant is injured. For recommendations on what to do in these cases, see the previous sections.

  Hibiscus after flowering

Hibiscus in the autumn in the garden

Hybrid perennial hibiscus is almost all winter-hardy, they can be grown throughout Ukraine, and in Russia - only south of Moscow, but subject to shelter for the winter. The ground part of the hybrid hibiscus dies in the fall, so it is cut almost to the surface level and burned, the rest of the bush is abundantly watered and then high up with earth, and the area, in case of too cold or snowless winters, is mulched with sawdust or dry fallen leaves. Next spring, the powerful rhizomes of the hybrid hibiscus will give new shoots on which beautiful flowers will bloom.

How to winter hibiscus

How does hibiscus winter, or Syrian hibernate? In the middle zone, he needs a mandatory shelter, especially if you grow terry plant varieties. Some gardeners living in regions with harsh winters dig hibiscus, place them in a container or a large pot and keep it in the basement or in another cool room until spring, and again in the spring they plant it in open ground. If you decide that your hibiscus will winter in the garden, in the second or third decade of November, when the air temperature will be between -5 ºC and -10 ºC, build a frame around the hibiscus on which to pull lutrasil, spanbond or agrotex. If in your area there is no frost more than 15 ºC, your hibiscus will be protected by such facilities.

In the photo: Hibiscus bloom

However, the best way to protect hibiscus from frost, and at the same time to avoid their aging under materials that do not allow air to pass through, is to cover the hibiscus bushes with spruce branches, accumulating snow on themselves and not allowing the hibiscus to whirl and overheat. The plant is covered in three layers with spruce branches, laying branches like a hut, after tying a hibiscus bush with a rope and putting on a sackcloth on it. However, often in such shelters rodents climb and eat warm bark on hibiscus, dooming the plant to death. To prevent mice or rats from destroying your plant, spread mousetraps around the hibiscus or place bait under the shelter of bait - wheat poisoned by rodents.

  Types and varieties of hibiscus garden

Hibiscus garden is represented mainly by varieties of Syrian hibiscus, however, other plant species, as well as their varieties, are grown in the culture.

Syriac Hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus)

Surprisingly, it comes from China, not from Syria. In nature, plants of this species reach a height of 5-6 meters and are deciduous shrubs with bright green egg-shaped leaves about 10 cm long and single flowers of different colors. In culture, in addition to hibiscus with simple flowers, terry hibiscus is grown, and the form of the plant can be both bushy and standard. Of the popular varieties of greatest interest are:

  • Diana   - a shrub up to 2 m high with white flowers wavy along the edge of the petals with a diameter of about 12 cm;
  • Vayelit Ilar Double   - a very powerful upright bush with double or semi-double flowers of violet-blue hue with red spots in the middle;
  • Pink Giant   - a bush with single pink flowers with a purple spot at the base of the petals;
  • Carneus Plenus - shrub with flexible shoots and terry fawn-pink flowers with a crimson spot in the middle.

Pictured: Syrian Hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus)

Hibiscus triple (Hibiscus trionum)

The species is native to Central and North Africa, although today it is widely grown in all areas of irrigated agriculture. The root of this plant is pivotal, the stem is straight, branched, up to 80 cm high. The leaves are tripartite, petiolate, alternate, with pubescence. The flowers are yellowish, with a diameter of up to 4 cm, with a dark red middle.

The peculiarity of the species is that the flowers open in the morning for only a few hours, and close in the afternoon.

The flowering of plants of this species lasts more than a month, because a new hibiscus bud is formed in the sinus of each leaf, and when optimal conditions are created for tricot hibiscus, new flowers will appear daily.

In the photo: Hibiscus triple (Hibiscus trionum)

Hibiscus hybrid (Hibiscus hybrida)

In addition to these two species, growing both in the wild and in culture, hybrid hibiscus and its varieties are grown as garden plants. As already mentioned, this hybrid was bred when crossing three North American species - hibiscus holly (armed), bright red and swamp. Hybrid hibiscus   - herbaceous perennials, which are distinguished by spectacular and very large flowers. The best varieties:

  • Youth   - a bush up to one and a half meters high, slightly branched, stems of a light yellow-green hue, from which shoots extend at an angle of 60 °. Leaves are also yellow-green, three- or five-notched. Pink flowers with a white bottom and a bowl, up to 10 cm in diameter, have the shape of a tulip;
  • Late   - a bush of compact shape about a meter high and of the same diameter, densely leafy with serrated, oval-arrow-shaped leaves with light veins on thick petioles. Flowers, raspberry-pink with a lilac hue in the form of narrow bells with a diameter of up to 7 cm, open on short thick peduncles;

In the photo: Hibiscus hybrid (Hibiscus hybrida)

  • Pale pink   - a grassy bush up to 170 cm high with short shoots extending at an angle of 60º from the branches, with three-pronged yellow-green leaves with a serrated edge and tulip-shaped pink flowers up to 12 cm in diameter with a white bottom and bowl;
  • Pink and china - bush up to 130 cm, branched stems, yellow-green, leaves deeply incised with a wide, protruding middle lobe, dusty yellow-green hue, on petioles up to 6 cm long. Large bell-shaped light pink flowers with barely noticeable yellowness and a white pharynx, up to 12 cm in diameter, sit in bunches on short peduncles.
  •   Blooming

Hibiscus, still known here under the name of a Chinese rose, has long changed the status of a purely houseplant to the title of one of the most fashionable flowering crops for garden design. Hibiscus seedlings today are on sale almost as widely as a variety of varieties of roses. At the same time, species hibiscus are actively replaced by hybrid ones that are able to winter in open soil even in the middle lane. Growing garden hibiscus is not so simple, but all the efforts to care for, and to choose a suitable location, and shelter will pay off with a unique spectacle of huge gramophone - flowers on a lush crown.

Frost-resistant and not very hibiscus

Hibiscus in the middle band is grown as:

  • perennial for open soil with shelter;
  • annual plant;
  • perennial in a tub shape or with a dig for the winter, which with the advent of cold weather is cleaned in bright, cool rooms.

In the last two roles, you can grow and hibiscus chinese, or Chinese rose (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), and hibiscus syrian (Hibiscus syriacus), and marsh hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos), and grassy hibiscus triple, hibiscus northen (Hibiscus trionum).

In the open ground, only two species winter without problems - hibiscus hybrid   and some varieties hibiscus syrian, which is often called hibiscus garden. Moreover, Syrian hibiscus is not always tree-like shrubs, while hybrid ones are grassy perennials. The difference between them today is blurring, since the winter-hardy Syrian species are also hybridizable and obtained selectively. Therefore, it is legitimate to say that only hybrids can winter in the middle zone in the soil, but the origin and specific species name is not so important as the growth form is shrubby or grassy. When buying, it’s wiser to focus on the nature of growth. Powerful root tubers of hybrid hibiscus are kept under minimal shelter even in very severe frost, aboveground parts - only in woody and shrubby forms when sheltering.

Tri-hibiscus is often attributed to fairly frost-resistant species, but it can only be planted if adult plants that are already adapted to your region are purchased.

What to look for when buying hibiscus for a garden?

In order not to be mistaken with the choice of hibiscus, be sure to evaluate the assortment of local nurseries and garden centers, contact experienced gardeners, and not buy plants from catalogs (especially foreign ones): for the ability of hibiscus to survive winter, acclimatization and adaptability of mother plants is crucial. Just belonging to hybrids will not give any guarantee. Therefore, choose trusted, with a good reputation sellers. Since various varieties of this plant, suitable for growing in your area, usually cover the entire palette, it is enough to choose the right color and feel free to get a new soloist for garden compositions. When buying, specify the form of growth, the usual conditions for the plant.

Hibiscus for growing in open soil is best purchased with an open root system, and not in containers. The roots must be very powerful and well developed, thick and strong. At the same time, make sure that the seedlings have reached 2-3 years of age or older: the older the hibiscus, the more frost resistance it will show.

Choosing a place comfortable for garden hibiscus

Growing conditions are similar for all hibiscus. This is the only plant that has the same requirements for lighting and soil for growing in the ground, and for tub and potted hibiscus.

Hibiscus belongs to the most sun-loving garden plants. And in regions with harsh winters, good lighting for them is a critical parameter. For hibiscus, sunny and maximally warm areas are suitable, protected from wind and drafts, which are especially dangerous for plants in early spring. Orchard hibiscus throughout the flowering period does not tolerate permutations from place to place and do not like even turning.

But the soil is very easy to pick up. Hibiscus develops well in any loose, high-quality garden soil, if only the risk of stagnation of moisture was minimal. Drained soils with a good level of organics, improved before planting and nutritious, universal earth mixtures for tubing - that's all they need.

Planting garden hibiscus

The best strategy for growing this plant is to plant hibiscus in the soil in spring. So young plants have time to adapt and fully winter with a simple shelter, do not require too many cares. That is why it is no coincidence that hibiscus seedlings are presented in the greatest number in garden centers and on the market in the spring, along with fruit trees. Such hibiscus can be covered in the same way as adult plants - in the autumn, spud with dry leaves and spruce branches.

But if you bought hibiscus in the fall, do not despair. Reliable shelter will help young bushes survive the conditions of the middle lane. Simply mulch the soil with a thick layer of plant mulch, cover them with leaves and tie them with burlap and spruce into 3 layers or arrange an air-dry shelter on the principle of sheltering roses, wisteria or clematis - and the hibiscus will successfully survive the first winter.

Garden hibiscus is planted in open soil in large planting pits, at the bottom of which it is better to lay at least minimal drainage. The removed soil is improved with a portion of bone meal or superphosphate, compost, and humus is placed at the bottom of the pit. Hibiscus is planted while maintaining its usual level of penetration.

Campus hibiscus is transplanted every spring, before the start of active growth. Most hibiscus need very large tanks with a volume of 30 liters or more.

Garden Hibiscus Care

Hibiscus loves stable humidity, but also tolerates droughts. True, the latter affect flowering. They do not threaten the plant itself, but they are necessarily manifested in the dropping of part of the buds. To succeed in its cultivation, you need to provide hibiscus support irrigation. Fortunately, it is very easy to understand when it is critically necessary to water the plant. Hibiscus itself signals a lack of moisture by dropping leaves. But it is better not to wait for their wilting, and at the first sign of drought, simply water the bushes in the same way as the most capricious perennials. Irrigation hoses need systemic, frequent, maintain light moisture, daily - in summer. Any hibiscus will not refuse from spraying.

Hibiscus loves mulching, which helps retain moisture and plays the role of protection against extreme heat. The best materials are straw and peat with humus.

Hibiscus is sensitive to top dressing and their composition. The plant does not tolerate a lack of nitrogen and iron, but an excess of the latter can become a traumatic factor for it. It is best for hibiscus to use special mixtures of fertilizers and micronutrients for flowering plants containing high amounts of phosphorus. For hibiscus in open soil, 2-3 top dressings are carried out - in early spring and at the budding stage (you can add another 2-3 weeks after the beginning of flowering). There is an alternative - the second and third top dressing is changed for monthly or more frequent irrigation with fertilizers for potted plants, but this is a risky option. Planter plants are fed every two weeks using fertilizers for flowering plants or mixtures with a high phosphorus content.

Every 2-3 years it is better for the plant to carry out a fairly strong formation of the crown, while pruning should be annual. Garden hibiscus blooms on the shoots of the current year and for abundant flowering, young growth needs to be stimulated. Moreover, the plant tolerates pruning without injuries. They carry out the procedure of at least slightly shortening the tips of the shoots before the start of active growth, in the early spring (after removing the shelter). And the heat-loving tubal hibiscus, both Syrian and hybrid, are not afraid of topiary pruning and can be grown in strict form, expelled on a bole. Campus hibiscus is trimmed the same way once a year, but if desired, they can be formed more often. The optimal time for their haircut is the beginning of spring or autumn.

The most important thing is wintering

The wintering strategy of garden hibiscus depends on their winter hardiness:

  1. Syrian herbaceous and bush Syrian hibiscus do not need strong shelter, with age they can be covered at all with only minimal earthenware or not at all.
  2. Malozimostoyky old Syrian hibiscus and capricious varieties not in your region in the garden can winter only at a very mature age and with strong shelter, but it is better to grow them as annual plants or carry them indoors for the winter.
  3. Do the same, and if you are not sure about the frost resistance and the origin of the plant (or acquired a very beautiful, but initially moody variety). It is better to dig out the hibiscus together with a large earthen lump, move it into a container and store it in a cold, but not freezing and bright room.
  4. Framing and indoor hibiscus is taken to the house with a brief adaptation period as soon as there is a threat of night frost. They are best grown during the cold season as indoor plants or placed in a frost-free room with access to light.

The preparation of herbaceous hibiscus is different from the preparation of bushy and tree-like plants: they are cut to a height of about 10-15 cm above the soil level and sprinkled with foliage to the entire height or mulched with dry, light soil. This will be enough for wintering.

A distinctive feature of tree and bush hibiscus is the ability to become more and more frost-resistant with age. With good care and direct growing, hibiscus will become completely winter hardy after a few years, and old bushes will not even suffer from the most severe frosts. But preserving plants to maturity is a complex and demanding constant vigilance task. Hibiscus is especially sensitive in the first year after planting, but it is not worth taking risks and leaving them without shelter until the 4-5-year-old returns.

On a note.   Hibiscuses, especially hybrid ones, release leaf buds and show signs of growth very late, most often only in May, and sometimes they wait for summer. The absence of leaves should not be taken as a signal that the plant has not survived the winter: do not worry until June and only then draw conclusions. Moreover, the younger the plant, the later it wakes up.

In the middle zone, hibiscus for the winter should be covered at least minimally - spud with dry leaves to preserve at least the lower parts of the shoots. Young hibiscus, as well as all the bushes for which you want to prevent freezing of aboveground shoots, wrap more carefully for the winter:

  1. Mulch the soil around the plant with plant materials, and spruce the stems with dry leaves as high as possible.
  2. Wrap the hibiscus with spruce branches, tying it with twine (and preferably reinforcing with burlap), creating several layers of shelter. Do not use non-woven materials: they will increase the risk of aging, so it is better to prefer a simple burlap.

Most of the adult frost-resistant Syrian hibiscus capable of growing in open soil in regions with harsh winters without hiding for the winter successfully survive, preserving only the rhizome and buds of renewal. But they are not afraid of dying off the aerial parts: hibiscus blooms on new shoots, is well restored and foliage grows again. Thanks to the rapid growth, the bushes bloom by no means worse than plants that retain all the aboveground parts during the winter, although they do not reach the size and beauty of the covered hibiscus. But if you have the opportunity (and desire) to completely cover even the most adult hibiscus for the winter and thus preserve the aerial parts of the plant at least partially by the next year - use it without fail.

Do not rush with a spit and shelter: hibiscus is not afraid of small frosts, moreover, the plant must be allowed to harden on its own before wrapping up. November is considered an ideal time for sheltering hibiscus, but it is better to focus on temperature: they cover the plant when stable frosts are set at -5-10 degrees. It is better to create a shelter at intervals, in several runs - first mulching, then hilling, and only then - spruce branches. And even the huts from it can be created in 1-2 calls.

Diseases and pests of garden hibiscus

Hibiscus, despite its exotic status, copes with typical threats and rarely gets sick. Problems in its development are often associated not with diseases, but with improper feeding and care in general. So, for example, leaf fall, which is especially active at the bottom of the crown, occurs due to salting of the soil, and the absence of flowering is only due to excess nitrogen. Fungal infections are not scary for hibiscus, but soil depletion, waterlogging, active drafts, and the absence of mulch are a critical factor.

Pests threaten hibiscus in the garden only in the vicinity of infected plants. Aphids, thrips, whiteflies are especially fond of tubular and potted hibiscus, and the spider mite is found very often. It is better to fight with any insects immediately with insecticides. True, one should not forget about the correction of care that caused the vulnerability - in particular, measures to moisten the air.

The bark of a hibiscus, sheltered for the winter by a spruce without burlap, can attract rodents, in particular vole mice. To avoid an unpleasant visit and damage to the plant, set traps or put some rodent preparations around the spouts. If you used burlap besides lapnik, then such measures will not be needed.

Hibiscus breeding

You can get a new plant and cuttings, and layering, and the separation of bushes, and even seeds. Success in breeding hibiscus depends primarily on the right choice of mother liquor: you should not try to bring plants from indoor hibiscus to the garden. If you want to get a frost-resistant specimen, make sure that the mother plant not only tolerates winters well in your area under shelter, but also has adapted so much that it does not require full shelter with spruce branches. For breeding, use adult, well-adapted hibiscus.

The easiest way to propagate hibiscus is with cuttings that can be cut throughout the summer. For reproduction, young growth is used. Cut the cuttings with 2 to 3 internodes and immediately treat the sections with drugs that stimulate growth and rooting. Hibiscus cuttings are well rooted in heat, at a temperature of about 22-25 degrees in any sand-peat soil mixture. Moreover, the whole process takes no more than a month. Immediately after rooting, the cuttings must be transferred to individual containers with fertile soil and grown by watering only with warm water. Grow at least 2 years (and preferably 2-3) of cuttings of hibiscus as container crops, with a cold winter in the room and as long as possible growing in the garden. And only then carry them into the open soil.

Perennial hibiscus is grown from seeds only through seedlings, while sowing should be very early - from January to the first half of March. They require etching in a growth stimulator, loose soil mixtures, elevated temperatures of about 25-26 degrees Celsius and shelter with glass or film. Seedlings should not be touched until 2-3 full leaves are produced, after which they need to be peaked into small individual pots. The first 2-3 years, hibiscus is better to grow as container plants, and they will bloom at all only by the fourth year. Syrian and ternary hibiscus when grown as an annual planted directly in the soil in May. They will bloom by the fall.

Lateral strokes are separated and separated only in grassy hibiscus. The procedure is carried out on bushes older than 5-6 years in the spring.

Grass hibiscus is more suitable for mid-latitudes than tree-like and shrub varieties. It is frost-resistant, decorative terry and simple flowers are many large sizes. The flower is called hybrid, as it was obtained as a result of selection, the ancestors were North American varieties.

  The best quality for areas with frosty winters is the annual natural death of the ground part of the plant in the fall. Nutrients from the ground part go to the root, which is located deep in the ground and is a thickened shoots resembling tubers. This allows you to save the plant from freezing, covering the rhizomes for the winter. Hibiscus grassy withstands thirty degrees of frost. Watch it!

  Over the summer, the plant creates thickets up to 3 meters tall with abundant and varied flowering. One flower may be up to 40 cm in diameter. If the root is injured during wintering or spring, the plant will die. Otherwise, the requirements for the care and cultivation of grass hibiscus do not differ from other garden forms.

Agriculture Hibiscus Hybrid

  A place for planting flowers is chosen light and protected from the cold wind. It should be noted that each bush consists of several erect trunks, on which additional branching is created by trimming. Therefore, initially the bushes are planted at a distance of a meter from each other. It is beautiful and background for other colors. Bushes are perennial, with the replacement of the upper layer of the earth in one place can grow for many years. The plant likes well-drained loam. It does not tolerate close standing of groundwater and calcareous soil.

A planted in a lowland will certainly get wet in the spring. If the site does not leave options, the landing site must be raised and a drainage substrate should be arranged below.

Hibiscus herbaceous loves:

  • showers on leaves, but only in the mornings and evenings, when the sun is weak;
  • watering in moderation, without overdrying the soil;
  • top dressing every two weeks with full fertilizer taking into account biology in each period;
  • loosening is frequent, but superficial.

If all conditions are met, the flower will delight for a long time an unprecedented size with tropical flowers.

Preparing the plant for wintering

In the second half of summer, the composition of the juice is changed and the plant begins to prepare for wintering. At this time, nitrogen fertilizers must be excluded.

With the first autumn frosts, the flowering of hibiscus ceases, and it begins to prepare for winter. You can not cut off the ground part, it must dry out and give a supply of food to the roots. At this time, plants are raking, sand is added to the ground. After the stems have dried, they are cut. When steady frosts are established, loose vegetative insulation is poured over the roots. It can be sawdust, straw, leaves. Shelter should be loose, let air through. On top of the tussock is covered with non-woven material and on top of the poles a frame is created to throw a sackcloth on top in the coldest frosts.

  In spring, the extra layers are gradually removed, the mound is raked and a transparent film is installed above the landing. Closed from night frost, the plant will quickly throw out shoots, and there will come steady heat. When young shoots appear, they need to be pinched so that the trunk branches.

How to breed hibiscus hybrid

Hibiscus is easy to propagate. All cuttings are easily rooted. For reproduction apply:

  • seeds;
  • autumn cuttings;
  • spring young shoots.

Seeing a grassy photo, planting and caring for a handsome man will not seem burdensome for a gardener. You can ask for cuttings from the happy owner of the plant from the fall, after the cessation of color and until the branches die off. This is the top of young stems. They need to be put into the water, wait until a thick lobe of roots appears, then put them in small glasses in the winter and leave them to grow in the room. The bushes planted in spring will bloom in August at their permanent place.

Growing grass hibiscus from seeds allows you to get new forms of flowers. But seeds germinate after stratification. If you sow them in the garden, and then grow, plants will bloom in 3-4 years. Spring propagation of grass hibiscus and care of it from cuttings does not present any particular difficulties. Planted cropped branches for rooting should be in a greenhouse with wet sand. Young plants are left in the winter under cover. The following spring, hibiscus hybrid is planted in a permanent place.

A bush growing in a constant place quickly grows and requires division. In spring, when the earth melts, the root is carefully dug up and divided in half. Each slice is sprinkled with crushed charcoal. A neatly planted, divided bush blooms with a little delay.
