Is it worth it to make holes for the mixers yourself. How to cut a hole in different types of sinks

It is impossible to name the absence of special openings for faucets or faucets in the sinks that are produced in our time, this is just a necessity. The fact is that the installation technology of such products involve several location options for the sink itself. The modern assortment offers several standard diameters for plumbing, so it is quite difficult to guess in advance with the size. It is better not to guess once again and not to risk it, but to figure out how to make a hole in the stainless steel sink for the mixer yourself.

Varieties of modern sinks

The two main variants of kitchen sinks are most in demand today - stainless steel and ceramic products. Manufacturers are in no hurry to make holes in them, blaming this work entirely on the shoulders of sellers and end consumers.

Important! If you wish, you can agree directly in the store on drilling holes of the required size. The cost of such manipulation is quite acceptable, you only need to specify the place, diameter, make a payment. As a result, you will receive a finished product with decorated places for the installation of mixers and taps.

It would seem that the problem has been solved, but in practice, situations often arise that completely do not coincide with the plans of consumers. For example, when ordering a kitchen of non-standard sizes, or the kitchen equipment itself, if the mistress of the house is left-handed, the hole in her new sink is located on the right side, which is incredibly inconvenient for her.

Before cutting a hole in the sink for the mixer, first install it, take a good look, and only then decide where to make room for the nests. If you still decide to do everything yourself, then use the following useful recommendations:

  1. All manipulations with the product are carried out immediately before it is mounted on a stationary place - this will prevent premature damage and deformation of the object.
  2. Install the sink horizontally on a wooden base, then drill a hole with a special drill.
  3. In the case of using a punch and a hammer, it is enough to manually pierce the fixed bowl with special nozzles, selected previously for the diameter of the holes of the tap or mixer in a new sink.
  4. If you want to use a punch of a special design, then note that it operates by the extrusion method. Typically, such a device consists of two nozzles and a threaded pin, a compression washer and a tap. It is enough to put the pin in place from the outside, screw the washer, make a tightening-pressing.
  5. The use of a special drill involves the use of a cone-shaped drill, working according to the simplest principle.
  6. When buying a mixer with large-diameter glasses, it becomes necessary to prepare a special landing socket. This problem can be solved in two ways - you can order a nest in the store or drill several holes around a circle with a smaller diameter.

How to make a hole in a ceramic sink with your own hands?

It is quite simple to make a hole in a ceramic sink for a mixer yourself. The work includes the following steps:

  • Mark in place of the intended hole, then drill.

Important! Such seemingly simple manipulation in practice causes many problems for inexperienced people. Here you can’t use a drill with a winning stand, because instead of drilling, peeling or chipping the material, it’s A metal drill has proved to be excellent here, but for it you will need a drill with minimum speed, preferably a manual one.

  • Walk the tool several times through the partitions between the holes.

Important! Remember that when drilling ceramics can quickly heat up, so you need to control this. It is better to drill with a thin drill, work along the entire perimeter of the future nest.

  • Cut the strokes with an electric soldering iron, hammer out the plugs with a hammer.
  • Saw the material with a jigsaw so that the edges are perfectly even.
  • Sand with a round abrasive nozzle on the circumference of the socket. If you don’t have it at hand, you can use the round file.

Important! Some modern bowls already have special marks, on which it is enough to aim with a hammer to pierce a hole. But it is recommended to do this as carefully as possible so as not to destroy the material.

How to make a hole for the mixer in a stainless steel sink?

There are several proven options for how to cut a hole in the sink for a mixer made of stainless steel. In already installed plumbing, it is impossible to make such holes, since it can crack due to the support on the countertop. If possible, rent or buy a special cutter to make your job easier.

Prepare the following tools:

  • Mounting tape.
  • Marker.
  • Round file.
  • Hammer.
  • Punch.

The instructions for making a hole look like this:

  1. Before starting work, the sink should be turned upside down so that it abuts against the table surface with all edges.
  2. Make a circle of the required shape and size from the mounting tape, attach it to the selected place, circle with a marker.
  3. Mark the center to make it more convenient to punch a hole with a punch.
  4. Point the point of the center punch to the center of the circle made of the mounting tape, punch the initial hole with smooth tapping movements.
  5. Extend the opening with a round file to the previously defined size.
  6. Thoroughly sand the edges of the saw to get the output of the required diameter.
  7. Seal the edges of the fresh saw with sealant.
  8. You can install the sink.

Traumatology is full of people who thought they did not need insurance. And the stores are full of sinks that do not have openings for installing a mixer. And not a single sink having two openings for installing two mixers, one for each opening. It is understandable. Why install two mixers in one sink?

And if from time to time it seems to you that you are the only hole in the sink and you feel lonely on an island bounded by its outer, smooth ceramic edges, then who will understand this, and to whom you can tell about it, hoping that at least you listen, not to mention sympathy and understanding?

It seems to me that there will be too many two holes in the sink for the mixer, and not one - too few. Therefore, today we will talk about how to drill only one hole in the sink. In a ceramic sink, which does not have a single hole for installing the mixer from the very day of its birth, if only the sinks have such days, birthdays.

Some people do not understand the importance of having a hole in a sink for a faucet and consider any text containing a large number of words “hole” to be nonsense. Therefore, I will try to write easier without abusing such words as “hole” and “sink”.

Where to start drilling a sink
and how to drill a sink

To drill a sink, you will need ceramic drills and a tungsten carbide crown for cutting round holes with a diameter of 33 mm. For drilling, it is better to use a hammer drill, rather than a drill. And not because the punch has a stronger blow. We will not use the blow at all. The rotary hammer has a lower rotational speed, but more weight in kg. and power in watts. But if you do not have a punch, then of course take a drill, but slow down, otherwise there will be no sense from the crown.

Marking and drilling

Start with the layout, this is the most reasonable thing you can do, decide where there will be a place for the hole in which the mixer will be installed. Once you've made your decision, use the marker and draw a point in the right place.

Now charge the cartridge with the ceramic drill clamped in it and start drilling. Need to make a through hole. The hole is needed so that you can insert a drill in it, which comes complete with a crown.

The ceramic of which the sink is made is very durable. Its strength is comparable to porcelain stoneware. If you had to drill or cut porcelain tiles, then you will understand me. Porcelain stoneware is very durable but brittle. If you act carelessly, it can be easily split. Therefore, drill a hole in the ceramic sink carefully and without haste.

First you need to drill a very narrow hole in the center, and then expand it with another drill. First use a 6mm drill. Then go to 8 or 10. During drilling, constantly cool the drilling site with cold water, pouring from a bottle or other container.

Having finished with the central hole, start drilling with a crown. The first 2-3 mm. ceramics will be drilled without much difficulty, but then you will find disappointment in the capabilities of the crown. The crown will rotate on the ceramic surface, without causing it visible harm and without going even a fraction of a millimeter.

In order for the crown to continue drilling, it needs to be helped. It is done like this. Take a thin ceramic drill and drill shallow holes around the entire circumference of the crown already selected. Now the teeth of the crown will catch on something and then things will go faster. As soon as the crown deepens and slides again on a smooth surface, do the whole operation again.

Ceramic drill sharpening

Drills on ceramics are blunt very quickly. The tip is made of a very hard alloy, so they cannot be sharpened on a conventional abrasive disc or metal cutting disc. But if you install a diamond segmented disk on a grinder, then you can deal with sharpening a drill in ceramics. Many do not know, but such diamond blades perfectly cut steel, aluminum structures or cast iron.

Answering the question of Dmitry Panin (http: //site/forum/viewtopic.php? T \u003d 1370), I did not go into the details of the terminology, since the essence of the answer would not have changed. But, preparing the material for the master class, I can no longer use the terms so freely. Therefore, we start with the classification of sinks.

Depending on the material used in their manufacture, there are:

1. stainless steel sinks. The material is traditional - food stainless steel.

2. ceramic sinks that are made of refractory clay or, as Blanco does, from porcelain ceramics (kaolin).

3. sinks made of granite chips. They are a composite, 70-80% consisting of granite chips (quartz sand) and acrylic resins and pigments. Granite composite is a particularly durable artificial material. The strength characteristics of these sinks make it possible to withstand without consequences the fall of a steel disk weighing 800 g.

Therefore, the letter in Dmitry’s letter, of course, is not about washing from granite chips (note: “granite” is a Franke trademark for granite composite sinks), but about a ceramic sink. Sometimes this confusion in terms leads to the same cracks during installation, since the manufacture of holes in ceramic sinks requires a specialist to take other steps than those recommended for crushed granite sinks. So, in order.

The simplest and most universal way to make holes for two types of sinks is to use a diamond crown (photo 1). But at the same time, of course, it is assumed that the master has it. If it is not there, then it is precisely here that one should pay attention to the difference in the ways of performing work. Further advice is given in accordance with Franke's recommendations for granite chips and Blanco for ceramic sinks.

According to experience, in the washing of granite chips there are always loose molten plugs that should be knocked out at the time of installation (photo 2). As a rule, they are already marked with a colored circle on the front surface of the sink.

First of all, the sink should be freely installed in the cutout in the countertop (photo 3). At the same time, the elements fixing the sink to the countertop are not fixed.

Next, install a suitable tool and knock out the molded plugs with a strong blow of the hammer down (Fig. 1). A suitable tool in this case is a punch with a diameter of 8 mm or a round steel bar, but not a screwdriver! Keep in mind that the cork should be pierced only from the front (top) side.

Align the edges of the hole with a rasp (photo 4 and 5).

When preparing for the manufacture of holes in a ceramic sink, immediately note that manufacturers recommend doing something with the sink only when it reaches room temperature. In no case should you make holes in the sink, which was made from frost. An unsecured ceramic sink requires careful handling. Before the installation of the sink in the countertop and the installation of drain valves, it is not recommended to allow sharp blows to it.

To make holes in ceramic sinks, mark the center and draw a circle (photo 6).

Around the circumference, the holes are carefully drilled with a thin drill at a distance of 4 mm from each other (photo 7). It is best to use for this purpose the factory-prepared places on the back of the sink (photo 8). To avoid the formation of cracks and chips, before washing a hole, install the sink in the cut-out of the countertop or otherwise fix it firmly.

Then, from the front of the sink, without applying significant force, knock out the drilled disk with a punch or a round steel bar (photo 9).

If there is a need to expand the existing hole in the ceramic sink, draw a circle of the required radius around the existing hole with the same center. On the front side of the sink, make frequent (at a distance of 4 mm from each other) cuts along the entire circumference (photo 10). Using a chisel or punch, without making much effort, remove the remaining parts (photo 11). Then, with the rasp, align the edges of the hole.

Fulfillment of these simple requirements will allow you to avoid both cracks and save time and nerves in finding the guilty, buying and remaking the sink. And, absolutely banal advice, immediately hire a qualified specialist.

We bought a mortise sink type "granite" with a wing. Today we have a kitchen. There was no hole for the mixer in the sink. The master installer refused to punch him. As a result, we are now sitting in the kitchen without water!
Does anyone know how to make such a hole for a mixer?

Return the sink and buy another. How did you even buy without a hole ?!

21-11-2007, 21:42

The sink can be designed to use a wall-mounted mixer, then a hole is not needed.
Or maybe a hole in the countertop is supposed - this is the case with us, but we have a sink for underfloor installation, you do not have one?
  Does she have any bumps?

Buy a special guillatine in the store, or draw a circle on the sink less than the base of the mixer and walk around in a circle with a thin drill. Drill holes as close to each other as possible, then punch with a chisel, between holes.

Do not scare a person, what does the guillotine have to do with it? What to chop off with it ?? Maybe they meant the clamp? Only she is not needed.
If you decide to drill (although why do you need it: either change the sink to another design you need, or drill a countertop), then buy a core drill (hollow cylindrical) of the desired diameter. You can do everything in one pass, without any small holes, which you can hardly do with neatly without dexterity.

There, at the sink (meaning BLANCO), there is a place for a hole for the mixer. It is not specially pierced so that the sink can be installed with the wing both to the left and to the right. (accordingly, these places are allocated symmetrically on both sides)
Those. I understand that you don’t need to draw anything, there is a green sticker in the place where you need to break through.

If this can be done with a core drill, then it's great, tomorrow we will try to buy it. And can you just fuck at this place with a chisel ?! Will it break out?

22-11-2007, 09:55

When we bought a sink, we were offered in the store to immediately punch a hole for 200 rubles.

22-11-2007, 10:15

In Blanco sinks, the tap hole is simply knocked out. In these places, the stone is specially made thinner. But in a place not intended for the mixer, I do not advise trying to drill a hole

22-11-2007, 10:45

Of course, if there is room for holes, then no drill is needed, in the instructions. said how to knock it out.

22-11-2007, 11:11

us this hole immediately upon purchase and done. current asked how the sink will stand.

22-11-2007, 20:56

There should be two places for holes, depending on which side of the wing you turn it around and knock it out.
and also they are marked with stickers

The question was only how to knock out! What kind of tool, so as not to break the sink.
By the way, I learned that a hole can be knocked out in the Blanco service center. It costs 200r. This is in the district of metro Lesnaya.

Does anyone know how to make such a hole for a mixer?

Here is your question. Everyone answers you.

In general, strange, of course, the installer you have. Our set the sink and punched this hole without problems

Thanks to all!

The development of events.

Friday morning. I handed over the sink to the nearest store to make a hole. They said it would cost 300r.
Friday evening. The master’s call to the cell phone: "I didn’t do a damn! I didn’t have time! Now only on Monday!"
Saturday morning. I go to the store, pick up the sink. Heavy, dog ...
Saturday night. The sink stands in its place in the kitchen. I'm near. In the hands of a drill d \u003d 10 with a winning tip..php? U \u003d 72)) to confirm the operation.
A minute later. Confirmation received. Hit! The hole is ready. Although not round. A dozen more strokes are weaker, tapping with a hammer, file grinding. There is a hole.

Sunday evening. The sink is installed on silicone sealant, the mixer is installed and connected, drain, overflow, etc. - too. I am sitting on the floor, sorting out all sorts of pieces of paper from the kitchen: installation, operation instructions, warranty cards, etc.
“Here are the figures,” I say, “they could not write in Russian!”
I read English to my wife (and myself) aloud. Installation instructions for the sink ... Point five: "In some cases, the following operations may be necessary." A sticker is drawn, a drill, a hammer, it is written that you need to hit the sticker several times ... In short, this is the sequence that I performed!
They neigh for a long time. It is sometimes useful to read instructions.
